3241. INTERN. Nimbus goes to Noah's Ark in NANAS. Animal Activism in Singapore

Singapore is a small city of around 6 million residents. Around 80% of them live in high rise apartments in townships like Ang Mo Kio and Toa Payoh.  Many of the younger generation volunteer at the animal welfare shelters to care for the stray dogs, cats and the homeless.

I met the highly energetic Ms Lynda Goh in 2008 when she requested my help to relocate 21 dogs from Yishun, Singapore to NANAS, Johor.  Some images are shown:

In 2018, Singapore has around 80 animal welfare groups, according to Ms Lynda Goh from Noah's Ark, NANAS, Johor.

She had been a volunteer with NANAS since 2002. I met her when she requested veterinary help to relocate the Khatib Bongsu dogs in Yishun to NANAS some years ago.

TIPS FOR VETS
The licence issued is valid for 7 days. If the licence has expired, there may be "requests" for the vet to issue another valid one without physical examination of the dog on compassionate grounds or expediency.  This is dishonest professional misconduct. The dog needs to be examined again.

3238. NATAS Travel Fair, Aug 17 - 19, 2018

More travel agents have participated in NATAS Travel Fair in Aug 17-19, 2018 compared to previous year. Chan Brothers was missing as the agency had participated in the Travel Revolution Fair, a competitor.

PACKAGED TOURS
1. High expenses of advertisements, rental and staff
Big agencies can afford the $50,000-60,000 rental for 480 sq m of exhibition space and draw the crowd. Small booths of small agencies must be in the niche areas (e.g. Bhutan, Uzbekistan) to attract interest.

2. Need to have new destinations e.g. Antartica or semi-tours (50% free and easy for example)
3. Hotels and resorts deal direct, by-passing travel agencies nowadays
4. Online bookings by younger generation
5. Suitable for families and elderly.
6. Hassles of planning and booking
5.

A 29-month-old Syrian hamster has a swollen left cheek and two infected tumours

HOOK

August 13, 2018.
WhatsApp msg

Hi,
Is this Dr Sing?
My 2-year-5-month-old Syrian hamster has a swollen right cheek. He is very old already. I am worried that the swelling may burst. Is there anything I can do to treat the swelling?  Two images were WA.

Dr Sing phoned and advised veterinary examination, as the cheek swelling may be an abscess.

DURING CONSULTATION (DAY 1)

Very old and emaciated. Still stores seeds in cheek pouch and ate. Passed stools.

Very high risk for anaesthesia. Owner gave consent as the right facial swelling was growing bigger. 12 hours post op, passed away

BURIAL

TIPS AND ADVICES
1. Early spotting of neck and lower body tumours - get a hamster vet to remove them.
2. Tumours get infected due to hamster scratching and friction with the floor during movement.
3. Malnutrition if not treated early. Emaciation and death soon.

RECALL YOUNGER DAYS
Owner provided some videos of the beloved hamster during younger days.

Jun 25, 2018
During annual health check and vaccination, I saw the epulis (arrow) on the left lower jaw and advised excision. The owner had to go to Myanmar and postponed the surgery till August.
