VET CASE - SHELL ROT AND FAST RESPIRATION
21 AUG 2025:
Owner:
Hi Dr, I have a red ear slider with suspected respiratory infection and shell rot. It is at
least 1+ year old, but still relatively small (about 6cm)rf
Dr Sing:
Please phone for appointment 62543326. Please send a video of the slider’s breathing and home, if okay with you
Owner:
Slider's home. UVB 50W light lamp
Owner:
Slider's current shell condition
Slider appears to still be able to swim but buoyancy is not straight. Slider has
inconsistent eating habits, sometimes eat sometimes don't (I feed hikari turtle pellets)
For context I've been in this sliders care for about only a month, its old owners
abandoned it at the fish shop I used to work at.
Dr Sing:
How many hours per 24 hours is the slider out of the water basking?
Owner:
just last week it was still basking, around maybe at least 8-10 hours, with exposure to uvb light and generally out of water, also went into water to eat pellets
recent days ive dry docked it, and give it some water at night
Dr Sing:
Did he have shell rot before you took over?
Owner:
yes he had shell rot already, i tried to combat it with OceanFree bacteria and fungus away medication; dilute and applied to shell
i tried to encourage basking and dry docking, i also use a soft brush to clean his shell but it didnt seem like it was getting better
I change slider's water every 2 days from my cultured fish tank water (no ammonia nitrite or nitrate present, hardness level kept acceptable)
with minimum 6hrs of light intervally on off
