5671. PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: MOVING BEES in Xujiahui Park, Shanghai, China. Use TV. Tulips image using TV

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS:  MOVING BEES. Use TV

Canon R5, TV, 1/1250sec, f/4.5, ISO 200. 8 Mar 2024. 12.25pm

If you use AV, you need multiple shots and may not get one sharp.
Using TV, I get 3 sharp shots. Shutterspeed of 1/1250 sec appears to be OK for this case.

I don't advise MANUAL MODE as the bees don't wait for you to get the 3 settings correct.
A good YouTube tutorial on the use of Manual Mode is at:
www.youtube.com/@seantuck, goto “Manual Mode” video.

Xujiahui Park is a park in Xuhui District, Shanghai. It was built in 1999, on the former grounds of the  Great Chinese Rubber Works Factory and the EMI Recording Studio. The park has an artificial lake with  a sky bridge running across the park.

5669. PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Magnolias in early Spring in Shanghai

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Magnolias in early Spring in Shanghai. Many internet photos do not show magnolia flowers on their own as there are many other flowers or objects in the background or at the side.

Magnolias need plenty of sunshine and shelter from strong winds and frosts, which can damage the flowers. Heavy pruning in summer will remove the developing flower buds and will also stress the tree, preventing it from flowering. Lack of water can also stress the tree. Blackened foliage is due to frost damage.

5668. PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Oriental Pearl Tower before sunset. Hand-held camera. Use TV Mode. Window of opportunity

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai. Evening sunset. Use TV Mode. Window of Opportunity.

Oriental Pearl Tower, 7 Mar 2024, 5pm.
Canon R5, Shutter Priority (TV Mode), 39mm, 1/1250sec, f/4.5, ISO 200.

I hand-held the camera, focused on the sunlight reflected on the Oriental Pearl Tower's observatory deck. I took multiple shots, not just one shot. Then I went up to the 7th floor of Pop Bar in ex-Union Building as my friends were going up for dinner.

After 5 minutes upstairs, I came down to ground level, but the sunshine had disappeared and the lighting was poor now. Hence, the window of opportunity does NOT wait for the photographer. Take the shot when you see it is going to be a good image.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai. Night. Use Manual Mode.

Oriental Pearl Tower, 7 Mar 2024, 6.34pm.

Canon R5, 37mm, Manual, 1/6sec, f/4.0, ISO 200.

I doubt the smartphone will give you such a sharp image at night. Canon R5 has a better lens to focus
on the Oriental Pearl Tower, but you still need to use MANUAL MODE AND PLACE YOUR CAMERA ON A LEDGE or tripod to get the sharp image.

If you hand-hold the camera, it is unlikely you will be able to get a sharp image due to shake from pressing the shutter. Take multiple shots, not just one shot.

5666. TRAVEL STORIES. China. A young couple checked into the Lestie Hotel after midnight on 8 Mar 2024.

Memories of Shanghai. A young couple checked into the Lestie Hotel after midnight on 8 Mar 2024.

8 Mar 2024 12.10am

Complimentary Supper from 10pm to 1am provided by the Lestie Hotel, Shanghai.

Lestie Hotel or Liz Hotel is probably the only one in the world to provide complimentary supper of porridge and noodles from 10pm to 1am. I had my porridge with vegetables with pickles on the 2nd floor. Then I went to the hotel lobby to ask about the number of rooms in this hotel.

The two young female receptionists were attending to a young lady dressed in white coat and scarf who showed an angry face at her male companion. This 30-year-old lady was unhappy with some matters and scolded him.

He was shorter than her, thin and meek. Soon he went out to get the object.

"Do you speak English?" I asked one receptionist. Both couldn't. I spoke in Mandarin and they told me that the hotel has 297 rooms. "How old is it?" I asked. They didn't have the answer.

I went out to take the photo of this hotel. Suddenly this unhappy lady came out and shouted across the road. Her words: "Why do you take such a long time! What are you doing?".

Her loudness shattered the silence of the black after midnight scene and vibrated across the gentle breeze chilling my fingers.

No patience. No respect for the young man who had gone further across the road, to a convenience stall to buy something for her. He ran back.

This dramatic incident reminded me of domineering women. They start young. Will their marriage, if any, last to the end of time? I have my doubts. It is so sad that one party needs to shout at the other in public.

My free supper at Lestie Hotel provided me a dramatic show as well. It was certainly a Shanghai I would not forget in my travels.

It would not be the landmarks such as the Oriental Pearl Tower, but the drama due to the actors and actresses I encountered during my travel!

--------------------------------
Research notes

National Age Well SG programme. Covers area of housing, active ageing and care services and help seniors to live more independently in the community.

Infrastructure includes:

1. Neighbouthood streets in all towns safer for pedestrians.
2. Build more sheltered linkways.
3. Upgrade bus stops to be senior-friendly. 5,000 bus stops in SG today,
4. More pedestrian overhead bridges to be retrofitted with lifts.

5. Two road lanes along stretches of Zion Road and Sims Place will be converted to
new cycling paths and widened footpaths by 2026.

6. Tighten regulations for personal mobility aids (PMAs) including mobility scooters. From 2025, lower speed limits of 6kmh, restrictions on size of the devices, new requirement for users to be certified with walking difficulties or relevant medical needs.

----------------------------

FRIENDLY STREETS IN OVER 10 TOWNS. They have a higher proportion of seniors or young families. Aim to make walking and cycling safer and more comfortable e.g. longer green-man signals and kerb-free crossings in areas with high pedestrian flow and near key amenities.

MORE COVERED LINKWAYS, BETTER BUS STOPS FOR SENIORS.
More covered linkways to connect MRT stations with more Friendly Street locations and key amenities within an 800m radius.

Illuminated bus information panels, more seats with arm and back rests and space for wheelchair users.

STRICTER RULES FOR MOBILITY AIDS
Misuse of mobility scooters by able-bodied people is the MAIN ISSUE. Mobility scooters are meant to be a substitute for walking - Reduction from 10kmh to 6kmh aligned to a "typical brisk walking pace". Use speedometers or reference from the walking speed of others.

New requirement of certification of medical need will not apply to users of manual or motorised wheelchairs.

Size of PMAs used on public transport are width of 70cm, length of 120cm, height of 150cm and a laden weight of 300kg. PMAs include power-assisted bicycles.

MORE CYCLING PATHS.

All HDB towns and estates will have cycling paths by the end of 2024.

1, Zion Road, convert up to 2 of 6 road lanes on a 700m stretch between River Valley Road and Ganges Avenue into a widened footpath and new cycling path linking to Alexandria Park Connector.

2. Sims Place, 2 of 4 lanes along 300m stretch of road in front of Sims Vista Market and Food Centre for a widened foothpath and new cycling path. A covered linkway.

5665. PHOTOGRAPHY WITH IPHONE 14. Inla Lake in Yangon, Myanmar. "Rule of Thirds"

PHOTOGRAPHY WITH IPHONE 14. Inla Lake in Yangon, Myanmar

4 Mar 2024. iPhone 14 takes some clear photos of Inla Lake at sunset and dusk. It is best to use the "rule of thirds" to create better composed photos. In this method, the object e.g. the boatman is positioned at the junction of the vertical and horizontal lines of 1/3 of the frame. Check the internet for details.

I had photoshopped the 4 photos below, using the "rule of thirds" to make them look better than the original.

5663. PHOTOGRAPHY OF TREES WITH NO LEAVES.

PHOTOGRAPHY OF TREES WITH NO LEAVES. Crop out the buildings to the right and left of the frame, but take these buildings in the original photo so that you know what to crop.

Deciduous trees have no leaves in winter. They conserves moisture within the trunk and keeps it from drying out. Wind can blow through the branches, putting less strain on the trees.
