Research notes

National Age Well SG programme. Covers area of housing, active ageing and care services and help seniors to live more independently in the community.

Infrastructure includes:

1. Neighbouthood streets in all towns safer for pedestrians.
2. Build more sheltered linkways.
3. Upgrade bus stops to be senior-friendly. 5,000 bus stops in SG today,
4. More pedestrian overhead bridges to be retrofitted with lifts.

5. Two road lanes along stretches of Zion Road and Sims Place will be converted to
new cycling paths and widened footpaths by 2026.

6. Tighten regulations for personal mobility aids (PMAs) including mobility scooters. From 2025, lower speed limits of 6kmh, restrictions on size of the devices, new requirement for users to be certified with walking difficulties or relevant medical needs.

----------------------------

FRIENDLY STREETS IN OVER 10 TOWNS. They have a higher proportion of seniors or young families. Aim to make walking and cycling safer and more comfortable e.g. longer green-man signals and kerb-free crossings in areas with high pedestrian flow and near key amenities.

MORE COVERED LINKWAYS, BETTER BUS STOPS FOR SENIORS.
More covered linkways to connect MRT stations with more Friendly Street locations and key amenities within an 800m radius.

Illuminated bus information panels, more seats with arm and back rests and space for wheelchair users.

STRICTER RULES FOR MOBILITY AIDS
Misuse of mobility scooters by able-bodied people is the MAIN ISSUE. Mobility scooters are meant to be a substitute for walking - Reduction from 10kmh to 6kmh aligned to a "typical brisk walking pace". Use speedometers or reference from the walking speed of others.

New requirement of certification of medical need will not apply to users of manual or motorised wheelchairs.

Size of PMAs used on public transport are width of 70cm, length of 120cm, height of 150cm and a laden weight of 300kg. PMAs include power-assisted bicycles.

MORE CYCLING PATHS.

All HDB towns and estates will have cycling paths by the end of 2024.

1, Zion Road, convert up to 2 of 6 road lanes on a 700m stretch between River Valley Road and Ganges Avenue into a widened footpath and new cycling path linking to Alexandria Park Connector.

2. Sims Place, 2 of 4 lanes along 300m stretch of road in front of Sims Vista Market and Food Centre for a widened foothpath and new cycling path. A covered linkway.
