I was inside my car and saw this truck driver hanging his arm out so that the cigarette ash can disperse outside the truck. We were at the red lights.  I had my camera on the car seat and took 3 shots. No time to check my settings which were:

Always set your camera to AV Mode to capture sudden shots. ISO should be 100 but I didn't have time to adjust.

 

SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES - a song that transcends time. The imagery is that the pain that comes with losing someone you loved also lingers on like the smell of smoke.

Canon R5, AV, ISO 200, 24mm, f/11, 1/125 sec. Sunny morning. Focus on 'eye' of boy on R.
Try not to have pedestrians in the background or anywhere.

 

Less crowds walking past statues when you take photos at around 9am. I took several shots, some with people in the background or walking towards me. These were of no use.

I was at the right place at the right time to meet for breakfast appointment at Starbucks at 9am. Previous photos of this sculpture were of poor quality as they were taken during noon time and harsh sunlight.

*Whenever practical, take photos of statues in 9am bright sunny morning. No human or less human traffic. I nearly didn't take the photos as I didn't have good quality images.

 SINGAPORE - 5 DEC 2023: 8.56am. Ciment fondu sculpture, 'The Climb', Ng Eng Teng, 1987, commissioned by HDB for its Bt Merah HQ is now in HDB Hub, Toa Payoh.

Sculpture was first placed in Toa Payoh town in 2004. Ng's sculptures embody his concerns with themes of identity and belonging, of basic human feelings and states of mind. He focuses on figurative sculptures.

Canon R5 on tripod. Hold tripod up higher to angle onto central core of flower. Use TV and 33mm focal length, NOT to USE 105mm to enlarge image, 1/500sec as image will not be sharp. This tripod is actually a folded one, becoming a monopod to be carried higher up to focus on the centre of the flower which is further in and small.

Handheld shots without the "monopod" may be OK but you may not get sharp details in the centre part of the new young flower. Enlarging image by using 105mm did not give me any sharp  details of the core. Take multiple shots.

It was risky for the 90-year-old man who had hearing loss, wanted to walk alone and along the busy highway after breakfast. Judy and others got him back to the hotel.

A good angle gives an attractive floral image. There were some pollinating ants which disappeared in this image.

 1. How do you deal with fast-changing situations?

Events and music photography is characterised by ever-changing unpredictable lighting. The hardest to balance is that of strobes and haze or fog. You lose contrast and options for focus since your viewfinder is filled with a white haze.

1.1 use a remote flash trigger to cut through the haze. Or timing shutter speed correctly with the strobe.

2 Special attention when setting up the camera at music events to get sharp and focused shots.

2.1  keep an eye on the shutter speed when using longer lenses as it impacts the clarity of images during fast-moving performances. 

2.2  Monitor lighting conditions during the day e.g. cloudy, sunny or in between. May need to change ISO or f/stop.  

2.3. Focus mode is also important. Do NOT use AF-S as you will get out-of-focus image with the wrong focus setting. I use AF-C (continuous autofocus) to ensure my subject stays in focus.

2.4. Favourite piece of equipment is my 20ft monopod. It captures impressive crowd shots. This links to a remote adapter and a phone app when I can monitor the shot, change the exposure and bracket different shots together. It can capture special moments that are one of a kind.

3. What types of scenes do you prefer to shoot - big spectacles or quiet moments? Over past 14 years of festivals, events and live concerts, the large wide-angle photos that show the whole event in one are often the most widely used images for marketing and social media are these images - crowds, performers and pyrotechnics in a single photo.

4. Tips for budding photographers to get into concert photography.
Offer support on nights they have live acts foc. Difficult lighting conditions and different bands. Get experience in using your equipment and what lands you a great shot.

4976. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

This photo was taken by 'accident'. A young man appeared while I was taking the photo of the pigeon basking on the step. The young man takes a single step after visiting somebody in Bishan Green. This photo symbolises the Chinese proverb of "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". 

 

It applies to learning a new skill like digital photography for Seniors like two 76-year-old woman who will not take smartphone photos but prefer to see or send me "Good Morning" images daily. It applies to teaching a daughter the values of respect for the mother-in-law as she marries and takes away her son. It applies to those who desire something in life or love from somebody by making the first move.

Sufficient space and width to take a billboard photo from Shaw Centre, which is distant and across the road from the facade of Tang's Plaza. Focus on "HERMES" in the clock centre.

Good morning. The 2nd photo is very difficult to get a sharp image throughout the advert, unless you know the settings (in red). I have not tried using the iPhone. At 2 pm on Saturday, many shoppers walked in and out. Some stood in front to read their handphones or chat!  I waited for a small window when there were no shoppers to take this photo. For seniors, practise daily with your smartphone. A journey begins with the first step.
