Luffa cylindrica var. insularum

COMMON NAMES:

Sponge Gourd, Dish-cloth Gourd, Smooth Loofah

There are no gourds like the Sponge Gourd! Not only can the young tasty fruit be cooked and eaten, the fibrous mature fruit can be used as a natural sponge. The high shock and water absorbency of these fibres allow for its infinite use, ranging from general cleaning, cosmetics, biofilters to machinery insulation.

Luffa cylindrica  is a very fast growing climber. Its leaves are 7 - 20 cm across and have three lobes. Flowers are bright yellow with 5 petals.  The fruits which grow to about 60 cm in length are oblong or cylindrical, smooth and contain many seeds. The fruit is brown when mature and dries on the vine to develop an inedible sponge-like structure.

 

Economic and other uses

The dry fruit of Luffa cylindrica  can be used as a sponge. Young green fruits can be boiled and eaten as a vegetable.

Environmental and other impacts

This species is capable of invading disturbed areas.

A new crop of frangipanis bloom outside T2, Changi Airport. This tree is well maintained. No black spot blemishes. External influences cause brown patches on petals. Many fall off with no blemishes. Is it due to climate change? Why?

A well cared for blossoming Japanese Fern Palm (Cycas revoluta) in a Sydney house garden in 17 Nov 2023, late Spring. Compare to a similar but very poor quality image in NParks website. Old model of Xiaomi Poco x3 Pro. I went to NParks website. Their similar image is very poor in quality.

4961. PHOTOGRAPHY SMALL FLOWERS HIGH UP TREE. Use TV. Bright sunlight 9 am

PHOTOGRAPH OF Lagerstroemia floribunda. Flowers are 3 cm across and one-storey high up the tree. I used f/5.0 and TV as there was a breeze. Also, I got the flowers in some 9 am sunlight. Hence the image is bright and clear.

 The tree blooms a few times per year, producing erect terminal panicle-inflorescences up to 50cm in height. Individual flowers (3 cm across) have ribbed scruffy-brown calyxes (fused sepals) and flower buds. Velvety crinkled petals fade from rich mauve to pale pink to creamy-white with age, making tree appear to produce flowers of different colours all over the crown.

 

 Lagerstroemia floribunda is grown as a roadside tree in Singapore as its terminal ornamental flowers change colour from  rich mauve to pale pink to creamy-white with age.

 Some hdb corridor gardens are very beautiful as there is a variety of potted flowery plants. Corridor gardens promote bonding with families and friends while growing plants outside the flats. Bring greenery into high-rise building. 

Two laws:
1. HDB by-law states that no person shall erect or install any fixture, structure, object or material on any common property or in any open space within a housing estate.

2. One rule says to maintain a clear passageway with a minimum width of 1.2m clearance.

Very rare for me to see a butterfly in Taiwan esp. Taipei city in November and on few days of visit. This one posed for me to take a sharp photo. Practise more and you'll find the best settings for each situation of wildlife butterfly photography.
