4673. Use 1/3 the focal length and F/16, AV Mode, ISO 400.

To get sharp image including “Japan Travel Centre”, I used Canon R5, 24-105mm, focus at 1/3 the focal length (man, left). Use AV Mode, F/16, ISO 400. I don’t know whether the smartphone can get this type of image.

4672. Photography tips: Reading room of Punggol Regional Library

SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

The reading area of the brand new Punggol Regional Library, Singapore, 23 Apr 2023. This is an excellent smartphone photo taken by Poh Kuan. The seat’s back has shown a split line (gap) where the two halves were “glued”, likely due to poor workmanship and design as the Library just opened on 5 Apr 2023. The distracting lines were erased by Photoshop. It would be a better image if the 5 seats were positioned “symmetrical” in taking the photo.

4671. Photography. Spadix and spathe.

Spadix: This is also a modified spike with a fleshy axis. It contains numerous sessile flowers arranged acropetally. The spadix is enclosed by leaf-like large, bright, colourful and curved bracts known as a “spathe”. Female flowers are present at the base, male and sterile flowers are present at the top

A spadix is a spike borne on a fleshy stem. The subtending leaf-like bract is called a spathe.

The spadix and spathe are a main focus of Anthurium breeders, who develop cultivars in bright colors and unique shapes. Anthurium scherzerianum and A. andraeanum, two of the most common taxa in cultivation, are the only species that grow bright red spathes. They have also been bred to produce spathes in many other colors and patterns. Anthurium plants are poisonous due to calcium oxalate crystals. The sap is irritating to the skin and eyes.

Anthurium plant greets visitors to Terminal 4, Changi Airport in Mar 2023. Some spathes appear to be infested with fungal spots and have had lost their pink colours. It is a daily battle to maintain the health of plants and ourselves too.

The White Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum) has white spadix (fleshy spike with flowers) and spathe (leaf-like bract). The Anthurium is a purifying plant as its leaves suck up ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene and xylene from the environment.

4669. Photography tips from Francis Lee at Gardens by the Bay. Tulips

Thur 27 Apr 2023.

Tulipmania floral exhibit at Gardens by the Bay. I find it difficult to take excellent photos with my Canon R5 camera, 24-105 mm lens. I tried taking photos with AV Mode, F/22, ISO 100-200 today although there was no breezes swaying the flowers inside the Flower Dome. But the people at moving.

Photos turned out as to be not sharp.

I asked Mr Francis Lee for some tips and he was kind to do so.

1. Lens hood should be used to prevent light distraction as I had a lens hood but never used it.
2. To get sharp photos, focus at 1/3 of the distance of the image or use 1/3 distance from the bottom of the  LED screen. Use AV Mode and try 3 shots at F/5.6, F/11 and F/16. Choose the one that will give me sharp photos.
F/5.6 will give poor depth of field, so it may not be appropriate if I want all parts to be sharp

3. AV Mode is good as Manual Mode gets affected by fast changes of light. Today is a cloudy day and the sunlight cames and went fast.

4. He explained that the quality of our lens do not produce sharp images at F/22 which I used today to get overall sharpness. Better to try F/11 or F/16. Take 3 types of settings e.g. F/8, F/11 and F/16.

5. Very kind of Mr Lee to offer free advices by email if I need to know more.

4668. Facebook postings to Dr Daving Sing's FB - stock photos for sale

28 Apr 2023: This sighting of a butterfly at the Potong Pasir Connector path beside the Kallang River near the Central Expressway is rare in public parks and gardens for various reasons. One will be the regular anti-dengue fever pesticide fogging poisoning the leaves so that butterfly larvae and caterpillar cannot survive after eating such poisoned leaves.

The authorities will not know what to do to increase the butterfly population e.g. in Gardens by the Bay, you will hardly see more than 5 butterflies during any visit. Hard to believe, but true. Same for the Forecourt Garden of the Esplanade.

I was able to document its presence by creating a video which I posted on YouTube for the younger generations of Singaporeans to view at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ4EYgId28s

4663. Book. What I Wish People Knew About Dementia - Wendy Mitchell

 The Sunday Times Bestseller

1. When spoken language started to fail me, I found that writing my blog was an escape from the road blocks in my mind. Must type daily. If not, letters appear but not in any order. No one knows why  this part of my brain works

2. Blog  Which Me am I Today? 4,000 regular visitors worldwide. Remembering what I did each day. It shares ideas and information. Big headache after speaking engagements, nobody knows. Bullied by social media for being an activist.

3. Dementia has a beginning, middle and end. ie. various stages. Professionals do not see people in the early stages - think they are misdiagnosed. Many misjudge us because of this lack of knowledge.

4.  Dementia is a progressive illness. Referring to it as a death sentence has negative connotations. A sufferer is not positive to describe oneself as dementia person.

5. One-to-one chats are much better than a group chat. Friends avoid her or talk to her.

4. Tom Kitwoo's dementia-care model is still in use today. Put love at the centre of work that a carer does.

Highlighted the importance of occupation (having a purpose in life), comfort (free from distress and pain), identity (a sense of who we are), inclusion (a feeling of belonging) and attachment ( a feeling of security and safety).

5. Dementia is not a mental illness but a neuological condition. It is a brain disease not a faulty brain chemistry. Disease is associated with mental health. She has young-onset dementia at 50 and finds herself sitting alongside an 80-year-old. Huge stigma about mental health in society.

6. I prefer 'living as well with dementia as your circumstances allow" rather than "living well with dementia" as latter may have negative connotations and mean different interpretations for one person is not the same for another.

7. Most accurate representation will be to see people in all different stages of a dementia diagnosis. But film and media producers do not produce an accurate description of dementia. They allow themselves an artistic licence to otain a certain impact, in providing entertainment, suspense and dramatic effect. Cliches and stereotypes work in a short TV drama where they serve to speak in shorthand  to the viewer. Accurate, balanced and respectful are what she wants.

8. Don't use words like sufferer, demented, senile, burden, victim, plague, epidemic, enemy of humanity, living death. People with the disease don't feel stigmatised by it and don't fear it.

9. Sunflower lanyard communicate we have a hidden disability. Useful on bad days e.g. trains are cancelled, routes are changed at a moment's notice make my brain ready to explode. Complete strangers offer to help me. Some people ssway wearing the lanyard makes others take advantage of me. Your choice to wear them - it makes you feel safer, more able to travel and better equipped to go out into our own community.

10. She now uses Twitter to swap ideas, to boost each other's morale, to provide support or just a laugh. The limit of 140 characters can be understood and read. She tends to focus on the positives of living with dementia.Used Twitter as a helpdesk when she needed guidance on her train journey.

Membership of social media platform help to maintain a sense of identity among people with dementia, provide social connection and reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness following a diagnosis.

11. Zoom meetings good for us to laughing together - laughter is the best medicine.

12. iPhone and iPad are my door to the world now. Phone set to reminders pinging in my ear. Some daily (remember to eat) , some one-offs like check on an unwell friend. Reminder of things need to do set on the phone.

Simple tracker onto my phone for her daughters.

My London Tube app tells me which station and line I need without staring at the wiggling map with different colours.

Alexa - reminder to take medication, switch on lights upstairs, switch the kettle on,

by giving her a shout. Author lives alone.

13. Pedometer. 28,000 steps walked in one day sometimes. sunny day. Stick to lanes near her home.

14. What can nature teach us? Nature knows about life and death, chaos and order, light and the dark. Waxing and waning of the seasons are necessary. Reminder that there is nothing more natural than change, not something to fear and avoid.

15. ON WALKING. My daily trundles are my moments of mindfulness; with a camera rund my neck, search my surroundings for something to capture on film - a moment that might be lost seconds later, if not for this digital memory. She swapped town for country a year or two after diagnosis as the sounds and hazards of the city became too much for her.

Walking gives me a purpose and having a purpose keeps my brain working. I don't walk aimlessly: I'm always looking around to see what I can see. It's the social contact as well, the navigating of the walk that keeps my brain active. Walk alone to take photos or keep stopping to take photos.

dementia people walking around their neighbourhood give them not only a sense of freedom and empowerment but also make them feel that they are keeping their own disease at bay. Walking definitely give the author a purpose.

Maintaining a connection to nature is felt to be restorative, share excitement at spotting animals or the poleasure of looking at flowers during their da-to-day movements through their neighbourhood.  Pre-dementia days, I loved waking and seeing beautiful scenery but it was all about distance then. Now, she sees something different each day - the first snowdrops, the patterns the clouds make, the changing colour of the sky. Get so much pleasure from nature.

Time spent outdoors in nature was combined with restorative practices such as walking that help participant to manage life with dementia.

Walking in green and open spaces that were free of traffic and crowds...freedom of movment - a sense of autonomy to feel in control of their lives and to escape the pressure of isolation associated with their home life.

 16. Social participation and support are strongly connected to good health and well-being throughout life.

17. What is good for dementia person

17.1 SIGNAGE. Bright blue with white bold text. Contrasting colours, not blending colours on floors, walls and floors. Silver text on white signs are NOT good.
17.2 Carpets NOT good - swirling patterns, waves
17.3 Black marble floors with waves NOT good.
17.4 Noisy air conditioners

VET CASE. A 4-year-old red-eared slider has bumble foot.
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow), Toa Payoh Vets.  24 Apr 2023.

The slider was placed in a relative's home for 2 weeks. She was permitted free roaming in the garden. When the lady owner in her late 40s took the slider back after returning from Malaysia, she discovered a fractured left forelimb claw and wounds on the lower part of the back feet. The wounds are known as bumble foot and is common in rabbits and poultry. Apply antibiotic powder
for at least 2 weeks in this case study. The slider will be in the water for 4 hours daily to eat and poop. Then the wounds are treated and she is placed on dry area like the inside of the tub or bathroom. No more free roaming in the living area for at least two weeks.

Antibiotic powder will be re-applied two to three times a day until the wound is healed.

Treating bumble foot is a long process. It may take several weeks or months for a severe infection to heal completely.

4656. Three simple strategies for marketing your book

Writer's Digest, May/Jun 2022
Christopher Stollar, award-winning author and senior marketing consultant for a Fortune 100 company.

Your self published book won't sell because your're competingagainst millions of others. You need a strategic marketing plan for your story.

1. EARNED MARKETING STRATEGIES

Gain publicity for your product by convincing an objective third party to promote it for free

Research local reporters, feature editors or book bloggers before pitching them. Check works they have covered and authors interviewed. Then craft individual email pitches to each one of them. Pitch should be like a personalised query letter explaining why they should care about your book v thousands of others. Most media hunt for stories that include research, sound unique and address timely themes. Strollar pitched to a local TV reporter who had recently covered stories about trafficking. His 3-minute video about his novel - over 500 visits to his author website and over 50 sales. His earned media coverage - a dozen other news hits in local, regional and national media.

2. OWNED MARKETING STRATEGIES. Two most important mediums

Your Author Website - Wordpress with a blog and e-newsletter. Look professional and features content about both you and your book. At least a monthly blog article that highlights any earned media coverage received, positive reviews on Amazon and personal reflections about writing.
Send via e-newsletter. Consistency is key. Regular cadence of updates, whether daily, weekly or monthly.

Your Social Media. Focus on just a few. Not for gaining likes, comments and followers. Use social platforms to draw traffic back to your website or Amazon page for readers to order copies.

Strollar
publishes a monthly blog - promote through FB, Twitter and LinkedIn.  Call to action - visit author website to learn more and Amazon page to order a copy.

3. PAID MARKETING STRATEGIES
Paid digital media ads remain some of the cheapest, simplest and most targeted means of increasing your exposure to potential new readers.

3.1   Boosted Post. Once you publish your blog article and promote it on social media, you can pay FB (or other platforms) to "boost" it to readers you target. The minimum is $1 per day. Month-long is $30. Be as specific as possible e.g. your hometown who are interested in both fiction and human trafficking (The Black Lens - Stollar).  Sometimes to other cities or states, but more efficient to target a segmented list.

3.2   Paid Ads.  Cost more but can create custom sponsoed ads for your book that feature cover art, a simple logine and a "buy now" or "learn more" button that drives people to your author website or Amazon page.  Test niche audience for a month  - make edits to your ads later.

No guarantee of success. Your book is just a product and to find consumers who need it. Your job is to produce the best product that you can and to find customers who want to buy it, end of story.

The swimming pool is popular with families and children during weekends.

As regards photography, it is a pity that the management places traffic cones outside the entrance as they do NOT contribute to good impressions in a building photography of the frontage (see image).  Hence, I give 2-star rating.   Photograph taken using Canon R5, AV Mode, F/11, ISO 200. Focus on "SAFRA". Dull lighting as it is drizzling.

SINGAPORE-17 APR 2023. TULIPMANIA 21 Apr - 21 May 2023, displays uniquely shaped tulips from Eastern Türkiye. Cultivated with forms that are markedly different from the tulips people are used to see.

TULIPMANIA - 21 APR - 21 MAY 2023. Gardens By The Bay showcases tulips cultivated in East Turkiye. The website says these tulips are in “forms different from what people are used to.” They certainly look smaller and different in shape from the tulips in Keukenhof - the largest tulip garden in the world.

4648. Cannonball Tree in Gardens By The Bay.

Cannonball Tree

Aptly-named, the large and heavy, spherical, brown fruits of this tree certainly resemble cannonballs! When split open, its pulp exudes an unpleasant odour that appeals to pig-like mammals that help in dispersing its seeds. Its pinkish-red blooms surprisingly lack nectar but give off a sweet and strong fragrance. To attract bees, it produces two types of pollen - sterile pollen that they feed on, and fertile pollen that dusts their backs as they feed, which in turn effect cross-pollination when the bees visit other flowers.

4647. Birds - Oriental Magpie-Robin, Male, 17 Apr 2023, 18 Jul 2023, 9 Aug 2023.

PHOTO 1.

Oriental Magpie Robin
The male is easily identified by its striking contrast of black
and white feathers.

The female has black upperparts, but has a dark grey
breast.

This bird is known to sing well.

The male Oriental Magpie Robin (OMR) has striking black and white colours including the black breast. The female also has black upperparts, but has a dark grey breast. The OMR is a bird native to Singapore, but I rarely see it in public gardens and open spaces.

Suddenly perched 10 feet from me in the hot afternoon sunlight of Gardens by the Bay on 17 Apr 2023. Canon R5, 24-105mm lens, AV Mode, F11, ISO 200. Set to AV Mode. No time to waste.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: Handheld camera, use TV Mode, 1/125 sec as bird may not perch for long. In this case, he (black plumage as contrasted to a female with brown black plumage) was perched for over a minute staring across Lentor Road.
