VET
CASE. A 4-year-old red-eared
slider has bumble foot.
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow), Toa
Payoh Vets. 24 Apr 2023.
The
slider was placed in a relative's home for 2 weeks. She was permitted
free roaming in the garden. When the lady owner in her late 40s took
the slider back after returning from Malaysia, she discovered a
fractured left forelimb claw and wounds on the lower part of the back
feet. The wounds are known as bumble foot and is common in rabbits
and poultry. Apply antibiotic powder for at least 2 weeks in this case study. The slider will be in the
water for 4 hours daily to eat and poop. Then the wounds are treated
and she is placed on dry area like the inside of the tub or bathroom.
No more free roaming in the living area for at least two weeks.
Antibiotic
powder will be re-applied two to three times a day until the wound is
healed.
Treating
bumble foot is a long process. It may take several
weeks or months
for a severe infection to heal completely.
