4146. Performance of butterflies and dragonflies on Sat 22 and Sun 23 Oct 2022

22 Oct 2022. 9 AM. Bright sunny morning.

I was surprised to see the 4 species of butterflies reappearing in YCKC forest path. They were absent for a long time owing to thermal fogging and slashing of the plants and tree pruning in this forest path.

BUTTERFLIES

1. Unusual friendship. A yellow and a white butterfly danced and courted each other on the road for full 10 minutes. Species don't socialise and hence this was unsual.

2. Butterfly 3.  brown striped
3. Butterfly 4. chocolate pansy.

4. Dragonflies - yellow golden and red. Small size, hence juvenile.  Reappears.

5. Rare green and maroon moth seen again.

6. Mosquitoes active

22 Oct 2022: The Butterflies Dance For Me
Yio Chu Kang Cres road. Two species do not socialise. The yellow butterfly rarely stop fluttering. But for around 10 minutes, these two danced on their toes, twirl and fly here and there. Like ballerinas on wings on a sunny morning at 9 AM.  If you love Nature and wildlife, they reciprocate when you visit their domain. In this case, unexpectedly, the two species team up to dance for me! For a long time.                                                                       shutterstock.com/g/toapayohvets

SUNDAY 23 OCT 2022. EVE OF DEEPAVALI

SUNDAY 23 OCT 2022. EVE OF DEEPAVALI

24 Oct 2022:
Happy Deepavali.
I saw this rare (in Yio Chu Kang Cres forest) butterfly on eve of Deepavali. It flew within 6 feet but it flew away as I was trying to place my tripod to take a photo. It flew some 50 feet away. I managed to take a good photo. Its wings displayed the "lights" which Hindus placed on the eve of Deepavali.

This species is seldom sighted in Yio Chu Kang Cres forest. It is medium-sized and brown. Its "eyes" are prominent. By spreading its wings out, the image reminds me of the "lights" placed by Hindus on the floor, on the eve of Deepavali.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION. Miniature moths in Yio Chu Kang Crescent Forest - 19 Oct 2022 are seen again but less than ten in numbers. This is due to loss of habitat by regular tree pruning, grass cutting of the forest path, thermal fogging to control dengue fever degrading the environment for the past months. North-South Corridor (Viaduct) construction nearby in Lentor Ave will be in progress for the next few years, adding to habitat loss. Dragonflies, damselflies, moths, butterflies and spiders have had disappeared in the past months.

DEGRADATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN SINGAPORE

the process by which something is made worse, esp. the quality of land: One of the effects of environmental degradation is the absence of fiss.h in that river or butterflies in the public gardens like the Forecourt Garden, Esplanade where is rare to see a butterfly nowadays.

The local authority schedules regular anti-mosquito insecticide fogging of residential estates in Singapore. This method appears to drastically reduce the number of mosquitoes inside the house and outside, from my observation. I seldom get bitten by mosquitoes, but denque fever cases are increasing in some parts of Singapore.

Many species of butterflies have had disappeared as the poisoned environment caused by frequent thermal foggings poison the plants which are food for some butterflies. Poisonous insecticide also kills the caterpillars which could have developed into butterflies.

4133. HEALTHCARE. Wet macular degeneration treatment

21 Oct 2022.
I had lunch with a 74-year-old woman and her daughter at Novena Square 1's new stall which served Chinese food. One dish was similar to Putien's fried bee hoon. I had the mee sua without the prawns (worried about high cholesterol).

The frail-looking woman's left eye had been treated for the past 3 months with injection or laser. Since she felt her eye was swelling, her specialist examined her and prescribed the 4  monthly injections. His consultation fee was $100 and his procedure to inject the drug into her eye was $380. What she earned as a cashier cum desert drink server at the K K Hospital canteen would not have been sufficient for her Mt Elizabeth specialist treatment. Her daughter got her to this specialist and the inexpensive public doctors require a long waiting time via a polyclinic appointment.

She still continued working despite the setback as she did not want to develop dementia staying at home. Her daughter could not stop her from working at 74 years of age. "It is very difficult to get employment when prospective employers hear that you are 74 years old," she told me. So she woke up at 5 AM and took the subway to her workplace 5 days a week.

The eye specialist waived the cost of the drug which would be around $2000 per vial as she agreed to be on a drug trial. Four monthly injections are needed.

"I am aged," she told me over coffee. "Old people suffer from illnesses."  What can you say to her? She had not taken good care of her health earlier and was said to develop diabetes which leads to this diabetic macular degeneration of the retina of the left eye. That was what the drug was for. To reduce swelling via monthly injections for 4 months. Total costs will be more than $8,000 for the drug.

She was now very careful about unhealthy diets such that she was thin and looked frail. But she had no dementia and could walk on her own, except for today as the injection into the eye caused some vision loss. Her daughter supported her by holding her hand. "Get a cab to take her home," I advised. "No cab," she insisted. "Wow, you understand English?" I was surprised as she usually spoke to me in Cantonese and was an orphan. She was a servant girl in her rich uncle's family, just like the Nonya movie. So she did not have education. That was her hard life. She is however blessed with a filial daughter who brings her for treatment and pays for the costs.

4132. Small dot of an ear wart to a large ear tumour

CASE STUDY. A small dot on the ear becomes a large ear tumour.

On 19 Oct 2022, a hamster owner WhatsApp Toa Payoh Vets regarding a tumour in her hamster' right

ear. Was there cause for worry? I asked her to WhatsApp some images. She sent out of focus images as the hamster was moving.

There is cause for worry if your dwarf hamster has ear warts. The common drugs applied to warts will not eliminate them. Consult your hamster vet to surgically remove them once and for all. If left alone, the ear warts grow bigger and bigger.

If the owner ignores the ear wart, the hamster will try to rub it off the wart as it is irritating and itchy. Sometimes, the eye gets injured or infected due to dirt or dust falling into the eye. The eye becomes itchy. More rubbing over time may result in eye infections or eyeball rupture and prolapse.

APPOINTMENT TO EXAMINE AND PROBABLY TO AMPUTATE THE
LARGE RIGHT EAR TUMOUR IF IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO REMOVE IT ON 27 OCT 2022.

IF IT IS CANCEROUS, IT IS BEST TO AMPUTATE THE EAR PINNA TO PREVENT RECURRENCE

When the tumour was just a small dot, there would be no need to amputate the ear pinna.

4130. Storm water canal pollution at 6PM, 19 Oct 2022.

SINGAPORE - 19 OCT 2022, 6 PM: White cloudy liquid has just been discharged into the Yio Chu Kang Cres storm water canal opposite the Seletar Bus Depot at the Yio Chu Kang Crescent/Lentor Ave junction. Water will flow to the Seletar Simpang Kiri River and eventually to the Seletar Reservoir where our drinking water comes from.

I saw this white discharge at other times, but this evening, it appeared from under the bridge (foreground, not visible).

What is this discharge?
1. Unwanted insecticide chemicals for anti-mosquito fogging
2. Bleach or chemicals

Could the discharge be from:
1. The contractors of  the North-South Corridor (Viaduct) construction
2. The Seletar Bus Depot staff.

4128. SINGAPORE MRT SUBWAY STATIONS

19 Oct 2022:

WHERE DOES THIS HAMSTER LIVE?  IN SINGAPORE.

The dwarf hamster with the black mass dangling from her mouth lives in Singapore which has around 6 million people as at Oct 2022. Singapore is a city state with a good network of subway stations called MRT stations which are well located next to the bus station. Most people take the subway and bus to work or to shop as cars are very expensive her.

(Below is the image of Tai Seng and Bishan MRT and videos)

4127. CAR MAINTENANCE. Metallic screeching sounds from my car

18 Oct 2022 was my Audi car servicing appointment for my car with the metallic screeching sound some 2 weeks ago. There were no more sounds. I had not wanted to go. My older technician had gone to the a BMWr employer, but the young man replacing him provided good service too.

The rear brakes were bled out of air bubbles. So it was fortunate I went and reached there at 8 AM.

EXCELLENT AFTER-SALES SERVICE. REFRESHMENTS.
The tea lady who worked for 8 years was on leave today, so one of the 4 after-sales girls made the coffee. She could not ink a leaf on the Spinelli (Old blend) coffee in my cup of coffee.

2. Very well trained in after sales service. The four old girls had not returned after the Covid-19 had closed borders and they could not go home to Malaysia for around 2 years. No problem with replacements who are well trained. One said I was not entitled to the $10.00 taxi voucher as my car was not sent in for routine servicing. She offered me the shuttle bus service. I thanked her but decided to walk to the Tai Seng MRT station as exercise.

3. An LED screen displaying and welcoming customers who sent in the far for service could be a good idea.
