3333. Veterinary files fromm Myanmar. Abdominocentesis
Abdominocentesis and/or diagnositic peritoneal lavage (DPL) should be performed when there is a suspicion of abdominal fluid.
Abdominocentesis (abdominal paracentesis) in dogs is the procedure in which fluid is removed from the abdomen using a needle. Fluid is analysed for cellularity, protein content, chemicals and bacterial organisms.
Bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity test
Always perform an abdominal X-ray before abdominocentesis. Sometimes, abdominocentesis can cause iatrogenic pneumoperitoneum which may require surgery.
DPL may be needed when there are clinical signs of acute abdominal pain, fever of unknown origin, blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma, local peritonitis and negative taps on abdominocentesis. After peritoneal lavage, abdominocentesis can be done to draw fluid that can be analysed for cellularity and bacterial organisms.

A hamster has allergies again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atKMjvYjo5M
A hamster has left elbow inflammation 4 months ago but now it is OK. The owner restricted feeding to sunflower seeds but the hamster loses 10 grams of weight. The right elbow is inflamed as the hamster bites it. There is a large pimple seen during sedation. It is hard to know what causes this itchiness which occur in the right elbow and thigh. A wart on the left face would be excised.

This is a gentle hamster. Does not bite. Dr Daniel of Toa Payoh Vets is consulting. The inflamed skin hair is clipped and anti-inflammatory medication and antiseptic wash is given. A review in 2 weeks' time if the redness is still around.

This dwarf hamster suffers from an allergy, but the cause is not known. He bites his elbow and thigh skin till there are bite wounds and inflammation of redness. He is hospitalised for 3 days, his inflamed areas shaved and cleaned. Oral anti-inflammatory medicine reduced his itchiness. He bit my forefinger when I tried to restrain him.
The owner is advised not to feed pellets with colouring. However, the actual cause is unknown.
Dwarf hamsters, like dogs, suffer from allergies. Sometimes they are caused by commercial dry food. That is why I advise not feeding pellets for a trial. Very itchy paws, elbows, thighs and knees as evident by continuous biting are caused by allergies to sometimes, the environment (bedding, sand bath, poor cage hygiene etc) or exposure to feeding (brand of food, pellets and their colouring). It is very difficult to know the exact cause or causes.

Now the right elbow and right thigh are inflamed due to the hamster's biting of the skin area.. Under anaesthesia, I excised the left face wart and drain the right elbow abscess. The hamster is home now with anti-inflam medication orally. As to what allergens, this is hard to know.

3330. Itchy inner elbows - atopic dermatitis in people
Eczema and Allergies
The triggers that
bring on an allergy attack -- dust mites, pollen, animal dander, mold --
can cause some people with atopic dermatitis to break out in a rash.
Food allergies also can set off a flare-up. These allergens cause the
immune system to overreact, leading to skin inflammation.
-----------
-----------
Try Not to Scratch
People with atopic
dermatitis may scratch as many as 500 to 1,000 times a day. It worsens
the rash and can make an infection more likely. Use a cold compress to
ease the itchy feeling. Distract children with activities. Moisturizers
are soothing, and some medicated creams or ointments may help, too.
Corticosteroids
Over-the-counter
hydrocortisone products may help mild cases of eczema. Don’t use them on
children under 2 or for more than 7 days unless your doctor says it’s
OK. Sometimes, people need stronger corticosteroids to control the
inflammation. Long-term use can have side effects, such as thinning
skin, infections, stretch marks, and visible blood vessels. If other
treatments don’t work, your doctor may recommend steroid shots or pills.
Antihistamines
These meds may
provide relief from the cycle of itching and scratching for some people
with atopic dermatitis. Many OTC and prescription-only options are
available, each with slightly different dosing and side effects. Check
with your doctor for a recommendation.
Treatment: Hand Eczema
Alitretinoin, a
relative of vitamin A, can improve or even clear up this condition when
other treatments don't work. It hasn’t yet been approved by the FDA for
this use. It can give you headaches or dry, flushing, or sun-sensitive
skin. Alitretinoin can cause severe birth defects, so you should not
plan to get pregnant when you take it. It also helps to wear gloves
outside in winter to protect your hands.
Treatments for Children
Keep your child's
fingernails short and their skin moisturized. Dress them in
loose-fitting clothes and make sure they don't become overheated.
Depending on how severe the condition is, your doctor may recommend
corticosteroids to treat atopic dermatitis. There are also prescription
skin treatments, pimecrolimus (Elidel) and tacrolimus (Protopic), for
children 2 years old and up.
Bleach Baths
A small amount of
household bleach in the bath may help control atopic dermatitis if
someone has a staph infection, too. In one study, children with moderate
to severe atopic dermatitis and staph soaked in diluted bleach baths
and used an antibiotic ointment in their noses. These treatments
improved their skin symptoms. Parents should talk to a dermatologist or
other doctor first.
Natural Treatments
Some research shows
that probiotics, oolong tea, or Chinese herbal medicine may ease
symptoms. But other studies haven’t backed that up. Herbs and
supplements can have side effects, so talk to your doctor first. Things
that lower stress are a good idea to try.
Dry Skin Care
Even when the
eczema eases up, your skin may still be dry. Take short daily baths in
warm water. Pat your skin partially dry and use a thick moisturizer, as
well as any medication right after your bath. Moisturize throughout the
day and stick to mild soaps or cleansers. Look for fragrance-free
products to help prevent a reaction. Remember, "unscented" may just mean
the product contains another ingredient to mask the scent.
Living With Eczema
Does your child
feel self-conscious about his rashes? Help him avoid triggers and tame
stress. The American Academy of Dermatology hosts Camp Discovery for
kids with skin conditions. Adults with the condition may need to make
some changes. Jobs that need a lot of hand-washing or involve exposure
to chemicals or other irritants -- such as health care, housecleaning,
or hairdressing -- may not be a good choice if you have eczema.
You Can’t Catch It
Red, itchy eczema
patches may look contagious, but they’re not. “Eczema is basically an
allergy in the skin that starts out as an itch that turns into a rash,”
says Jennifer Haley, MD, a dermatologist in Scottsdale, AZ, who had the
condition as a child. Just like you can’t catch someone else’s hay
fever, you can’t catch eczema.

3329. No orange-breast green pigeon seen in Singapore

Dear David,
Sorry for the late reply. We do not have Orange-breasted Green Pigeon in our Singapore checklist. I believe they have only been sighted once or twice near Jurong Bird Park and therefore thought to be escapees instead.
The Pink-necked Green Pigeon on the other hand is a common resident bird in Singapore. It has a bluish grey head and a pink nape, neck and upper breast, and orange central breast. The Orange-breasted Green Pigeon has a greenish head and a much reduced pink upper breast and orange central breast.
You can see our entry of the Pink-necked Green Pigeon here:
Best regards,
Francis Yap
Admin for the Singapore Bird Project.

Orange-breasted green pigeon Treron bicincta
is very similar to the Pink-necked Green Pigeon. Principal difference in having the forehead, face and throat yellowish green, a more restricted mauve-pink area on the upper breast and a different tail pattern, the outer tail feathers being blackish with a broad pale grey terminal band. The female differs from the female of vernans in having a grey nape and hind neck and different tail pattern. It is also, on the whole, slightly larger and heavier-billed bird.

3328. Emirates Airlines - marketing
MARKETING - Creating market awareness - Miniature caps
May 20, 2019
Creating market awareness of the brand is very important in any business. From my observation, Addidas is the best as I can see its logo and name on every apparel esp. T-shirts and berets in Singapore. The young ladies buy and wear them as fashion statements without realising that they are advertising billboards for Adidas.
Emirates Airlines will be the best amongst airlines in this field. "Fly Emirates" in T-shirts and apparel are sold in Dubai shops.
It is a pity that they don't have miniature caps and berets. Singapore Airlines and Luftansa appear to me to be too conservative in apparel advertisements. There are opportunities to present to these two airlines, but I will go for Emirates first.
Attached are my travel photos of Emirates Airlines.

3326. Juvenile mynah and parrot eating Rose Apples in pruned tree - May 16, 2019 Thu
May 16, 2019. Thu
Two juvenile spotted doves were outside my neighour's house on the road side. They did not fly away on seeing me, as if I was invisible. Took 2 images.
I drove straight to the Rose Apple tree which is an hour's walk, as my leg muscles are tired from previous days' long walks.
On reaching the Rose Apple tree, I saw some birds circling a tall tree. Then they landed (an image)
Junvenile mynahs and green parrot with black stripped red neck seen pecking and eating Rose Apple hidden inside tree. Safer for them in case of predators.

Rainy morning. Went to SGH with J to check her ingrown toe. Podiatrist scrapped her nail bed to check and clear dead cells. "No pus," she said. "No photography of her procedures!".
