A hamster has allergies again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atKMjvYjo5M
A hamster has left elbow inflammation 4 months ago but now it is OK. The owner restricted feeding to sunflower seeds but the hamster loses 10 grams of weight.
The right elbow is inflamed as the hamster bites it. There is a large pimple seen during sedation. It is hard to know what causes this itchiness which occur in the right elbow and thigh. A wart on the left face would be excised.

This dwarf hamster suffers from an allergy, but the cause is not known. He bites his elbow and thigh skin till there are bite wounds and inflammation of redness. He is hospitalised for 3 days, his inflamed areas shaved and cleaned. Oral anti-inflammatory medicine reduced his itchiness. He bit my forefinger when I tried to restrain him.
The owner is advised not to feed pellets with colouring. However, the actual cause is unknown.
Dwarf hamsters, like dogs, suffer from allergies. Sometimes they are caused by commercial dry food. That is why I advise not feeding pellets for a trial. Very itchy paws, elbows, thighs and knees as evident by continuous biting are caused by allergies to sometimes, the environment (bedding, sand bath, poor cage hygiene etc) or exposure to feeding (brand of food, pellets and their colouring). It is very difficult to know the exact cause or causes.
Red leg and right elbow. The leg is now not red.

Now the right elbow and right thigh are inflamed due to the hamster's biting of the skin area.. Under anaesthesia, I excised the left face wart and drain the right elbow abscess. The hamster is home now with anti-inflam medication orally. As to what allergens, this is hard to know.

A dwarf hamster has reddish itchy elbows and back of knee inflamed skin. Cause is likely allergy as this condition occurs in folds of skin of babies with cow milk allergy.
This is a gentle hamster. Does not bite. Dr Daniel of Toa Payoh Vets is consulting. The inflamed skin hair is clipped and anti-inflammatory medication and antiseptic wash is given. A review in 2 weeks' time if the redness is still around.
A hamster bites his elbows, thighs and paws for many weeks - 2/2
