4731. The Tawny Frogmouth

The Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is a nocturnal bird, often confused with owls. However it is closely related to the night jars.It is resident in Australia and Tasmania.

Its flat, wide beak looks like a frog’s mouth. From a high perch, it uses its huge beak to attack ground prey or snatches moths in flight. Larger food sources like lizards and mice are bashed against a branch before swallowing.

-----------------

The Tawny Frogmouth in Bird Paradise, Singapore is often mistaken for an owl. It perches usually on the same tree with head angled upwards and eyes closed, during daytime. Visitors usually miss seeing it as its plumage resembles tree bark. This video creates awareness of the diversity of wildlife to the younger generation of Singaporeans who seldom interact with Nature.

4730. Wildlife Singapore - Hummingbird Hawk Moth

On 24 Feb 2025, at around 7 pm, I was photographing a wild flower called the Chinese Violet Flower in the Yio Chu Kang Crescent road’s secondary forest.

My Canon R5 was supported on a tripod. I focused on the flower. "This secondary forest does not have any rare creatures," I said to myself. I had been taking wildlife photos of this forest since 2018 for over a hundred times.

I had been taking wildlife photos of this forest since 2018 for over two hundred occasions.

The evening was still bright as the sun set behind me. I took a photo of the Chinese Violet before going home.

Suddenly, I heard a loud machinery sound and a large brown wide-bodied "insect" descended onto this flower. "What is this flying insect?" I quickly pressed my camera shutter to take at least two photos before it flew fast away.

I create this video to let future generations know that the particular species of the hummingbird hawk moth did exist in Singapore.

The videos of other hummingbird hawk moths in Europe in this video, were shared by other people overseas.

VET CASE STUDY: Warmed water for sick anorexic red-eared sliders help in their recovery. Warming the water in the tank of the sick in-patient red-eared slider, amongst other measures, helps in the treatment of sliders. This video discusses the correct water temperatures for different ages of sliders.

Videos shows one well managed Singapore pet shop selling juvenile red-eared sliders.

Full-spectrum UV lighting, a basking heat light, and a dry docking area (floating platform). Larger tank for bigger sliders. Water temperature 31 deg C for larger tank, 26 - 27 deg C for smaller tank.

OWNERS TO NOTE:
Prolonged immersion in water may cause shell rot due to fungal infections. Some new owners leave their sliders inside the container of water for 24 hours a day, leading to shell rot.

Cold waters make them lethargic.

VET CASE STUDY: Water temperature for red-eared sliders in tanks in a pet shop 5 March 2025. A survey of one pet shop selling juvenile red-eared sliders in its branches. Well managed set up for juvenile red-eared sliders for sale. The water temperature in the smaller tank is 26-27 degrees C, while that in the much bigger tank, it is 31 degrees C, said to be 24 hours daily. The sliders are active and healthy. A floating basking platform and ultraviolet light above. Sliders need a dry area to bask or keep dry as they are semi-aquatic animals. Prolonged immersion in water may cause shell rot due to fungal infections. Cold waters make them lethargic.

Get an aquarium, even for the smallest of hatchlings. Start with a 10-gallon tank if you must (though a 20-gallon tank is better), but be aware that your turtle will grow and need a larger tank pretty quickly. In addition, you will need to provide full-spectrum UV lighting, a basking heat light, and a dry docking area.

4277. Vet Case Study: Pyometra in an English bulldog

Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in female dogs, particularly those that are intact (not spayed). It occurs when the uterus becomes infected and fills with pus.

The condition often develops in middle-aged to older dogs, especially those that have not been spayed. The symptoms can include:

- Vaginal discharge (which may be bloody or pus-like)
- Increased thirst and urination
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal distension

If left untreated, pyometra can lead to severe complications, such as sepsis, kidney damage, and even death. Treatment typically involves emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus (spaying).

It's essential to work closely with a veterinarian to diagnose and manage pyometra, as prompt treatment is crucial for the best outcomes.

VET CASE STUDY: A cat in Myanmar swallows a sewing needle with thread. W...

Vet Case Study. A cat swallows a sewing needle with thread. What to do?

On 9th January, 2025, this 7-year-old female domestic shorthair cat swallowed a needle and thread. The worried owner consulted Dr Thet Hmue Kyaw in Yangon. Dr Thet’s X-ray showed the long sewing needle was lodged across the cat’s stomach.

HOW TO RETRIEVE THE SEWING NEEDLE FROM THE CAT'S STOMACH. 1. Endoscopy. 2. Artery Forceps with full surgical incision. 3. Endoscope with full surgical incision - this vet case study.

ENDOSCOPY AND FULL SURGICAL INCISION METHOD --- this vet case study.

A full surgical incision is needed. The abdomen is incised. The stomach is then incised. The vet inserted the end of the endoscope into the stomach and used its forceps to retrieve the needle. Near the incision, the needle had to be positioned such that one end of the needle could be taken out by hand. The cat recovered fully and went home.
