Vet Case Study. X-ray. A 30-year-old red-eared slider passes fresh blood for 2 days. Why?

Vet medicine is full of surprises.

This 30-year-old red-eared slider passes fresh blood for 2 days. Very weak and had poor appetite for 2 weeks. X-ray shows pelvic bone fractures stuck near its cloaca. Why would the pelvis fracture?

He was well cared for and given good food. 30 years is the life-span of red-eared slider generally.

But why did his pelvis fracture?

Old age osteoporosis? Imbalanced diet during old age (too much good food?). Lack of exercise? He had UVA and UVB lighting, switched on the whole day at times.

Owner said he had no fall from heights but traumatic injury is likely the cause of pelvic fractures. He was unlikely to be stepped on

He has a fatty neck collar, possibly owing to being overweight. He passed away on the 3rd day after passing cloacal blood.

5614. Vet Case Study: Egg binding case from internet searches

 REFERENCE:
https://www.veterinaryradiology.net/4691/9-year-old-turtle/

Findings

On whole body images, there are three oval, mineralized eggs visible in the coelom. One eggs is positioned within the pelvic canal, and the other two are in the left and right cranial portion of the coelom. The remainder of the coelom and skeletal structures appear normal.

Diagnosis

  • Egg binding

Ovocentesis was performed with a needle and syringe transclocally, and the egg was removed. The second egg required the same procedure a week later.

Q: How long have the eyes been swollen and shut? How long has he no appetite?
A: Illness started on 15 July. Eyes shut since 20 July when vet gave antibiotic injections. She took him to another vet who gave Vit A injection. Slider does not move and has not been eating since 20 July.

I hope I can do something at home. He has been through a lot. I don't want to stress him anymore.

I used to feed him fresh and dried shrimp and mealworm.

Voice call 24 min. Thank you for your explanation.

2. 3 Aug 2024
Please syringe feed small amounts of Critical Care 6 times per day to prevent malnutrition and death.
A: Will try again but I didn't have any luck before.

Please send video of original tank set up. Patience and help from a friend to syringe feed.

A: Took turtle to the vet for tube feeding and washing his eyes. Was very difficult to watch. He sedated him twide. A lot of food overflow from his mouth that the vet tried to scrape it out with a q tip and another suction device.
I don't believe his eyes ae infected, no discharge, only swollen. He is not gasping and sneezing but his eyes are shot. Is there anything I can do at home to help him?

5610. PHOTOGRAPHY WITH 70-300 mm zoom lens and P Mode in 2010

PHOTOGRAPHY WITH 70-300 mm zoom lens

 2010 PHOTO:

An example of a photo taken with Canon 40D, 70-300mm lens of undergraduates walking to another class for lecture on 7 Apr 2010 at 10.06 am.

I used P Mode which gave me the following settings:
Canon 40D, 70-300mm
119mm, 1/320 sec, f/4.0 and ISO 400.

In 2024, I would have used the TV Mode, with auto ISO settings.
Or AV Mode with faster shutter speed like 1/1000 sec at ISO 100 (need to experiment with this setting).

5608. Lenticular clouds. Weather photographer Francisco Negroni

 Issue 282 www.digitalcameraworld.com June 2024.

Top prize in Weather Photographer of the year 2023 - Francisco Negroni. Landscape photographer.

For 2023, the coveted Weather Photographer of the Year Title Prize Winner is Francisco Negroni from Chile. The winning shot, A Perfect Cloud, depicts Villarrica (Chile’s most active volcano) illuminating two rings of lenticular cloud with the warm orange light from the lava within. The snow on the volcano-top contrasts the lava's glow, and the star trail above signifies the passing of time it took to capture - a once-in-a-lifetime shot! The winning image was taken using a Nikon D610.

A huge lenticular cloud surrounds the crater of the Villarrica volcano, with the lava illuminating the cloud from within.

Lenticular clouds are fromed when air flowing over the ground encounters an obstacle such as a volcano. The air rises and cools, which can allow moisture to condense and form clouds.

For lenticular clouds to be formed, the atmosphere needs to be stable; this means that the air forced up over the high ground readily sinks back down again beyond it. Due to their unuusal shape, LC are often compared to flying saucers.

The weather is intimately linked to his landscape photography, adding drama to the scene and illustrating the natural forces that affect and shape the world. His main motivation is to record the natural world that surrounds us, but in its wildest version - like volcanoes.

Advice - learn more about the great outdoors, know your equipment and techniques that help you face any kind of natural situation so that you can capture perfect images.

Camera: Nikon D610, 105mm f/2.8 lens.
Title: A Perfect Cloud.

CAMERA SET UP

He always started up with a quick shutter speed as quick as possible and ISOs depending on the light. He never goes above 3200. Controlling the shutter speed is his main priority.

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT

He has a lumbar compression fracture. So, as light as possible. A camera and a good zoom lens and that's it. His car or home is never far away. A snack of dry goat's cheese. Stay outside for hours. Camera is protected by a bag.

He wears standard gear, a thin glove on his right hand partly protected by the bag. The wind is his biggest enemy. He use disposable tissues to wipe the lens - can't use special cloth as he can use it once only.  He has to deal with the risk of condensation and sudden temperature changes that cause the lens to fog up.

HUMAN ELEMENT
There is always a human element in his photo. He never venture deep into the wilderness.

SHOOTING LOCATIONS

A smartphone app that shows rain forecast. A lot of scouting online as the 48-hour forecasts are inaccurate. He stays a few days or longer in foreign country or one region.  Dangerous and violent some spells of bad weather are.
