5608. Lenticular clouds. Weather photographer Francisco Negroni

 Issue 282 www.digitalcameraworld.com June 2024.

Top prize in Weather Photographer of the year 2023 - Francisco Negroni. Landscape photographer.

For 2023, the coveted Weather Photographer of the Year Title Prize Winner is Francisco Negroni from Chile. The winning shot, A Perfect Cloud, depicts Villarrica (Chile’s most active volcano) illuminating two rings of lenticular cloud with the warm orange light from the lava within. The snow on the volcano-top contrasts the lava's glow, and the star trail above signifies the passing of time it took to capture - a once-in-a-lifetime shot! The winning image was taken using a Nikon D610.

A huge lenticular cloud surrounds the crater of the Villarrica volcano, with the lava illuminating the cloud from within.

Lenticular clouds are fromed when air flowing over the ground encounters an obstacle such as a volcano. The air rises and cools, which can allow moisture to condense and form clouds.

For lenticular clouds to be formed, the atmosphere needs to be stable; this means that the air forced up over the high ground readily sinks back down again beyond it. Due to their unuusal shape, LC are often compared to flying saucers.

The weather is intimately linked to his landscape photography, adding drama to the scene and illustrating the natural forces that affect and shape the world. His main motivation is to record the natural world that surrounds us, but in its wildest version - like volcanoes.

Advice - learn more about the great outdoors, know your equipment and techniques that help you face any kind of natural situation so that you can capture perfect images.
