4482. EXPRESSING MOTION. The panning technique

Panning is used to express motion in wildlife. Use a slower shutter speed, pan the camera to track the animal to isolate the subject. The background and anything other than the moving animal will become a blur.

1. Stop down your aperture to f/8.
2. Adjust ISO so that the shutterspeed is at f/15.
3. Put into manual mode and lock the settings.

When you locate the moving subject, get it in focus and pan your camera.
Once your panning feels smooth, gently press the shutter and keep the panning motion going thoughout the shot.

A mirrorless camera. Turning on the electronic shutter keeps the viewfinder from going black during the exposure to help keep the subject stable.

Canon R5. AV Mode. ISO 200 - 400. f/8. Tripod. Focus on eye panning camera left to right, before the waterhen appears in the frame.

.The waterhen wanted to cross my path, saw me and scurried down the river bank. He hurried from L to R hidden by reeds and plants 🌱 out in by NParks. This bird 🦢 does not trust humans and will not stay for one second. I placed my tripod to his R and took over 100 💯 photos to get one sharp one. Focus on his eye.

Hi Dr Sing, we tried several times, this guy don’t want to swim unless in main tank 🥲 keep walking around but not sure if can observe if level swimming

[7:30 pm, 10/12/2022] David Sing: He is scared of new environment. Let him swim short periods in usual tank. Probably not fully recovered in lung congestion which involved over 50% of lungs as seen in X ray

Remnants of flower at the tip of the cucumber will fall off or be plucked off 

As the cucumber matures, the lumps disappear, leaving a smooth surface.

4476. Hoverfly in Singapore

Many of us enjoy watching hoverflies as they dart around our gardens amongst the bees and wasps. Sometimes, it is hard to tell the difference as many hoverfly species mimic honeybees and bumblebees (there’s even a hoverfly that mimics a hornet!).

Hoverflies belong to the family Syrphidae which consists of over 250 species in the UK, some of which are incredibly rare. One of these remarkable rare species is the bog hoverfly Eristalis cryptarum.

 

What does a hoverfly do?

Adult hover flies are important pollinators and can be found feeding at flower blossoms or around aphid colonies, where they lay their eggs. The larvae of hover flies are important predators of pests, such as aphids, scales, thrips and caterpillars. They are rivaled only by ladybird beetles and lacewings.

 

 Adult hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen. The adults need flowers as nectar and pollen sources. They are attracted to weedy borders or mixed garden plantings that are also infested with aphids

 

How can you tell a wasp from a hoverfly?

The main difference is invisible to the lay observer, given that most encounters happen when the wasp or fly is airborne: wasps have four wings, hoverflies two. More obviously, wasps are "wasp- waisted" while the hoverfly's thorax and abdomen are divided by less of a narrowed section or have none at all.3 Aug 2004

 

 

 

 

4475. Video 1/2. Travel Stories. Singapore. A brown Anole in The Esplanade on 6 Dec 2022: Video and images.

 6 Dec 2022. 12.30pm. Hot and humid but sunny. 

Video 1/2 shows the heat onto the Forecourt Garden of Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, Singapore. 

One or two butterflies. No Oriental Garden Lizards, but one anole seen on tree trunk after a walk about search for the lizards. I had wished to see a butterfly and a lizard. A Common Rose butterfly suddenly fluttered in front of me as I walked past the shrubs opposite the Family of 5 statues. Later, a yellow butterfly. No more. Towards the final part of my walk, nearer to the building, I saw an anole. It eyed me but did not scurry away while I took photos and videos.


Video 2/2 shows the anole eyeing me like a statue while I video it. Canon R5 camera.
I also took several photos, using a tripod.The anole does not bother to scurry away. I was 15 feet away.
