1015. To publish*****:An excellent lecturer performs
Yesterday Monday
I attended a lecture on the Singapore Law Society's Conditions of Sale 1999 and 2012. This subject is very boring but the lawyer lecturer kept the class awake and laughing with his anecdotes of his experience of buyers, sellers and realtors rushing to complete the sale at the last hour.
"This (afternoon) class is better than the one in the evening after work," he said. "I see students closing their eyes as if in intense mediation throughout my lecture."
"Once I asked the class what is the meaning of 'outgoings'?" A student stumped me as he replied it meant 'Not incoming."
He said he bought a helicopter from Guangchou which has a building with 6 floors selling just shoes. The Hokkien-speaking seller could connect with him as he spoke a bit of Hokkien. The seller jumped on top of it and the helicopter still function. The helicopter is the size of a big box the width of his stretched hands. It is a remote-controlled toy. I was wondering whether he was spinning a tall tale and at the end of his lecture, I asked: "What happened to the helicopter?" He said: "It is OK."
An excellent speaker cum lawyer can bring in more clients locally and internationally. However, there is no such equivalent for vets in Singapore. He could bring the 33 conditions of sale alive with just power point slides and his personality and acting as well as presenting his company's one-stop legal practice. I wonder whether he has the expertise for writers, agents and publishers as I intend to start an e-publishing business and gave him my name card for him to follow up.

1614. Sunday's interesting case
Sunday July 7, 2013. Blue skies, white clouds, no haze.
Case of the destructive cat.
"$2,000 worth of leather furniture had been clawed," the young American lady said to me. "My husband has had enough. I have tried positive and negative reinforcement training but this cat just would not be trained." She had done a lot of research. However her vet had this no declawing policy. "In America, cats are declawed routinely. Why is it frowned upon in Singapore?"
"It is considered as cruelty," I said. "Declawing is a last resort. How did you do the training?"
"I give a biscuit when the cat scratches the scratching post. It does not work."
"What is your negative training method?" I asked.
"I squirt water from the water gun when the cat claws the furniture. But it does not work. Before re-uphostering the leather furniture at $2,000, my husband wants the cat declawed. I know that this cat cannot be trained. I had a cat declawed in America and he still claws the furniture with his paws but there was no damage."
The 3.5 kg cat was declawed on Sunday and would go home on Tuesday.
"The surgery can be done without the need to top up with isoflurane anaesthesia and with a lower dosage of Dom 0.1 and Ket 0.4 IM provided the vet operates 5 minutes after injection and complete the surgery in 5 minutes," I said to Dr Daniel who had prepared Dom 0.15 + Ket 0.6 which would give a longer duration of anaesthesia. "Once you delay the surgery, you will need to top up with isoflurane."
The cat was operated at the lower dosage without any top up. The owner wanted me to phone her after surgery and today Tuesday, she phoned to enquire about her cat. "She can go home today," I said. Normally, there is no bleeding on Day 3 and the cat goes home with antibiotics and painkillers.
Another two cats needed declawing. For tenants, cats scratching the Landlord's cupboards, back of chairs and other furniture meant a heavy compensation to the Landlord at the expiry of tenancy. I had seen one case of a high end condo in Ardmore Park in which the cat had clawed several of the doors of the high wardrobe with vertical scratches. The Tenant would then have to pay for the damages.

Enamel hypoplasia in a one-year-old Golden Retriever
Sunday July 7, 2013. Bright sunny clear skies. No haze.
Very rarely do I see a case of enamel hypoplasia in a dog in Singapore in my past 40 years of small animall practice. It is like finding a treasure
"Most likely due to an abnormal development of the teeth," I showed the first-time owner of this adopted one-year-old Golden Retriever the defects in the tips of the crown of all the teeth of his dog.
"Any drugs to give? What to do?"
"In dogs, there is no treatment. In people, there may be some materials to cover the crown
A blood test showed the only abnormality was an increase in serum urea at 16.6 (4.2-6.3).
