Girrrrrlll if you are putting that hair in a tight bun without properly oiling and a treatment, you are damaging that hair! Always, and I mean always, oil and use a moisturizing mask or leave in conditioner to create that tackiness that a slick back bun needs to stay in place. No gels, no mousses, just TLC. You are very welcome
- Preparation: Part hair down the middle or brush all back, applying serum or gel to tame flyaways.
- Secure Ponytail: Use a brush to pull hair into a firm ponytail at the desired height (nape of neck for a low bun, crown for a high bun).
- Create the Bun: Twist the ponytail tightly and wrap it clockwise or counterclockwise around the base.
- Secure: Use hairpins or a sturdy hair tie to hold the bun in place.
- Finish: Apply more hairspray to lock everything in place.

In everyday culture
The position of a hair bun on the head can convey cues about the person's style, colored by social expectations. From the perspective of the United States, Hannah Goldfield wrote for The New York Times that a high bun "conveys a certain uncouth youthfulness, a sense of unseriousness, a need to provoke" and the low bun is its opposite. Perceptions have changed with time, however.[19]
Similarly, a messier bun, wherein hair is not pulled back tightly, can convey a carefree and casual persona or mood.[20]

[06:31, 17/02/2026] Dr David Sing: Good morning. Happy New Year. I listened to many Elderly Stories nowadays. Sometimes there will be a daughter-in-law "who wears her hair in a tight bun." What is a tight bun? This cashier probably is a good example.
