5018. PHOTOGRAPHY. A cosy coffee shop in Hong Kong
PHOTOGRAHY TIPS: Indoor cafe sharpness. Focus on EYE of waiter
(R).
Canon R5, AV Mode, 1/5sec, f/11, ISO 400
One of those rare cosy coffee outlets I would like to meet up. It has the design and ambience to entice me to drink coffee inside the cafe. I am surprised that the overall image is sharp. You can see the text on the walls.
Good morning. A photo of a drink in Hong Kong Pacific Coffee cafe on the eve of a wedding anniversary of decades brings back memories to the viewer. You can actually see the eye of the waiter and text of Pacific Coffee's mission on its walls.
See the red square on the wall. Pacific Coffee's motto (not mission) says "The Cup, The Thought, My Way", we strive to offer customers a total lifestyle experience. 'The Cup' – Brewing a quality cup from the heart '.

Indian Male migrant workers are recruited by syndicates at Terminal 1, Changi Airport to carry gold jewellery over and above the following limits as they evade Customs duty in India.
1. Male Indian nationals. permitted to carry up to 20g of duty-free gold, of a maximum value of 50,000 rupees (S$800), into India.
2. Female Indian nationals. double in terms of weight and value.
Singapore's gold is prized due to its quality. Gold smuggling in India spiked after the import duty of gold was raised in July 2022 to 12.5 per cent from 7.5 per cent.

5014. Vet Case. The Drooling Syrian Dwarf Hamster. Pre-anaesthetic consultation.
-----------------------
SCRIPT FOR YOUTUBE VIDEO
Vet Case Study by BE KIND TO PETS. A drooling Syrian hamster. Wetness around this hamster's mouth and neck for several weeks is due to excessive salivation. What is the cause?
"Excessive salivation in hamsters is usually due to overgrown teeth," I said to the lady owner. "Such teeth pierce the mouth causing ulcers and pain. This leads to drooling."
"My vet had clipped his front teeth some 2 weeks ago," the owner said. "My hamster still has wet mouth and neck! Why?"
"Your hamster also has cheek teeth called molars," I explained. "Overgrown molars can cause oral ulcers leading to drooling."
"Your vet had advised anaesthesia to enable him to check the inside of the hamster's mouth, but you didn't accept his advice because he had forewarned that this old hamster may die under anaesthesia."
Conclusion. Anaesthesia is needed to treat this case as the oral problem is inside the mouth.

A SYRIAN HAMSTER HAD A WET NECK DUE TO DROOLING.
Dr Sing Kong
Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow)
Some 2 weeks before 15 Dec 2023, Vet 1 had advised anaesthesia to check the inside of the mouth should medication fail to stop the drooling. The owner didn’t accept this advice as anaesthesia may kill this over 2-year-old.
One of my 4 opinions is that this hamster may have ‘overgrown’ cheek tooth or teeth. The sharp ends cut the insides of the cheek. This leads to painful oral ulcers which lead to profuse salivation. The hamster drools, dampening the neck all the time and stinking the hamster.
“I felt his cheeks and did not feel anything!”, the lady already confirmed that the hamster's front teeth were not overgrown and therefore not the cause of drooling. “He is over 2 years old, can still eat and run on his exercise wheel, so I leave him alone!".
My four main possible causes of drooling - molar spurs, impacted
cheek pouch, embedded seeds inside the cheek and oral tumours,
causing inflammation and ulcerations.
“Anaesthesia is
needed to treat the problem. It will be short duration,” I
explained.”No vets can guarantee no anaesthetic risk," I said
to the lady owner. She decided to wait and see.
Her mum who dislikes hamsters had been present on 15 December. She asked me on 19 Dec about the outcome of this case. She dislikes companion animals. "I can't stand the smells. A waste of money to have them as pets and to spend time to care for them!" were her mantra whenever she talked to me.
“Nothing has been done,” was my answer to the 75-year-old
mom. She followed up, showing her concern for the poor old Syrian
hamster.

---------------------------
Wetness around a hamster's mouth could be a result of drooling
Excessive salivation is a common indication of a hamster with teeth woes, often overgrowth. Hamster teeth continue growing throughout the life of the hamster, unlike adult people. Their teeth will overgrow if they are not worn down by chewing on food or wood.
Many hamsters with teeth overgrowth refrain from eating because they find the action extremely uncomfortable.
Overgrown teeth cause excessive salivation as the sharp ends poke the gums or inside of the mouth. Two types of teeth can overgrow. They are:
1. Front incisor teeth
2. Side cheek or molar teeth.

The Jumping Spider (10mm long) jumps to catch its prey e.g. ants, flies, other spiders. This one was watching a line of small busy ants passing it up and down the stalk of the plant in Lentor MRT Station garden. What is the best way to prey on one ant? Will the other ants come to the rescue? So many decisions to make to eat breakfast!

Spotted this small jumping spider 10mm long in Lentor MRT station gardens on 15 Dec 2023. 9.47 am. It sees a line of busy small red ants patrolling the stalk. A feast as this type of spider jumps to grasp its prey to eat. But it has to be aware of the environment. What if the rest of the small ants attack it if it jumps onto one for breakfast? It will die. So, a dilemma is created in a situation of feast. "Think before you leap?

5010. VET CASE STUDY. Short video. How to save money on vet costs. An old Maltese has a foul smelling ear. Chronic otitis externa
VET CASE STUDY. 2013. Lowest mortality rate. An old Maltese has a foul smelling ear. Chronic otitis externa
SHORT VIDEO SCRIPT
How to save money on vet costs. Short video 1/2.
Vet Case Study: Long-standing ear infections in an old
Maltese
1. Ear infections that last many weeks despite vet treatment.
2.
Chronic otitis externa is a common medical condition in dogs.
3.
Old dogs - ear infections and/or ear tumours. One vet case study is Video 2/2.
4. Vet costs - multiple
visits or vets for medical treatment, but no cure.
5. Owner stresses - ear scratching at night, smelly ear, soiling apartment.
6. Anaesthetic risk of death on
operating table. Old age, heart, liver and kidney disease, blood infection
7. A case study
of an old Maltese with ear tumours in Video 2/2.
How to save money on vet costs. Short video 2/2.
1. Save vet costs on multiple visits - early surgical treatment. Lateral
(Vertical) ear canal resection or removal.
2. If don't do surgery - infections to middle and inner ear to death.
3.
Prognosis - good in most cases. Dog lives a normal pain-free life.
Owner not stressed out in cleaning the dog's ears and soiled
housing.
HOT TO ACHIEVE THE LOWEST MORTALITY RATE IN ANAESTHESIA AND SURGERY
1. "shortest door to balloon time" is for procedures in interventional cardiology which is treatment of patients with coronary artery disease.
2. highest volume of patients treated annually (applies to national heart centres and universities)
3. lowest mortality rate.
For this case study, the dog is very old. Therefore the lowest mortality rate also depends on shorter duration of anaesthesia and surgery.
HOW TO SAVE ON VET COSTS – CHRONIC EAR INFECTIONS IN AN OLD DOG
1. "Just removing the tumour below the skin will not
resolve the problem of ear scratching," I said to the young lady
owner of the 14-year-old female spayed Maltese. She had consented to
ear canal removal surgery today, 13 Jun 2023.
1.1
Since 30 May 2013, her dog had 3 weeks of treatment. Now the skin
tumour on the right side of the ear looked almost normal and the
right ear had considerably less bloody discharge and no foul smell.
See image.
2. Abigail was now a young career
woman while her Maltese had aged. Her dog grew up with her during her
school years and was her best friend. She had consulted a few vets to
treat the persistent ear scratching, foul blood and pus discharge,
bad odour and pain. They gave her ear medication and cleaners. But
there was no cure.
3. Her dog had very high anaesthetic
risks. Old age, blood infections and heart disease due to murmurs.
She could just die of heart failure on the operating table.
4.
Diagnosis was chronic otitis externa. A long-standing bad infection
of the ear canal which had several rotting bony tumours.
5.
Treatment was ear surgery to remove the vertical ear canal with the
bony tumours.
6. Anaesthetic risks were very high for 3
reasons.
7. Prognosis is good after surgery in most cases.
8. No
surgery. Infections would spread into the middle and inner ear.
Swollen lower cheek filled with pus. Pain, loss of appetite and
death.
9. Informed consent. Surgery took 50 minutes, but the dog
survived. She lived to a ripe old age. Abigail was able to enjoy her
Bintan holidays and other travels stress-free now.
10. To
save on vet costs, surgery to remove the ear canal and its tumours at
first consultation would have been preferred.
11. For
ear surgery appointments, Toa Payoh Vets.
