4801. Tele-consultation of 3-year-old red-eared slider with paw "abscess".

VET CASE STUDY – TELE-CONSULTATION ON A RED-EARED SLIDER WITH SWOLLEN PAW.
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow).  20 May 2023.

On 20 May 2023 just after midnight, the owner WhatsApp to me the first image of the swollen paw of her 3-year-old female red-eared slider.  "Should I walk in or make an appointment? My red-eared slider has a paw abscess."

The younger generation cares very much for their pets and many will research the internet to arrive at a diagnosis. In this case, is it a paw abscess? I asked for sharper images and videos preferably. "The slider bites me," said the lady owner. "I can't take more images!"

What is the solution? "Turn the slider upside down and take close-up videos of the front and sides of the right fore paw," I WhatsApp back. She did an excellent job and I was able to tell that the swollen right fore paw as due to a long-standing inflammation from multiple wounds. So it was not just one paw abscess but several, over many weeks. She confirmed that.

What is the diagnosis via tele-consultation?

The free-roaming slider in the rooms could have her nails or paw trapped on some objects or had sharp hook-like things penetrating her lower paw and interdigital areas. Her water tank was free of objects or stones and pebbles. Therefore, the cause of the injury was her lifestyle of wandering in the rooms and getting injured over the past weeks.

4798. Photography: Friend or Foe? An Oriental Garden Lizard in Indonesia looks at me.

FRIEND OR FOE?

My last day in Bintan. I was walking past a patch of grass for dinner. A creature scurried across me. Too fast to see it. It looked like the big adult Oriental Garden Lizard. But it was camouflaged inside the hedge as you can see from the photos.

I screened the hedge where it had dived for cover. There was the body and tail not covered. The lightning flashed. A few drops of imminent thunderstorm. I should hasten to shelter to protect my camera from wetness. At least, to put it away inside my camera bag.

But this was the only sighting of an Oriental Garden Lizard in The Residence, Bintan. A sprawling complex of many house villas but no wildlife. No mosquitoes to bite me. A handful of small insects or flies. Nightly fumigation of the whole estate had wiped them out by pesticide poisoning.  So the guests do not complain and will refer others.

To shoot or not? The lizard did not move further. Why? It was eyeing me as to whether I was friend or foe?

Focus on tail/body junction. Canon R5, AV Mode, F/8, ISO 320, 1/40 sec. 16 May 2030.

4795. Food photography - BBQ Spareribs

18 May 2023:

FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY

Gochi-So Shokudo, Jewel Changi Airport.

Dinner at 6 pm on a Thursday. Not crowded at this time. Had Tenderloin Curry ($17.50) and BBQ Spareribs ($20.50). This is the second visit. The BBQ Spareribs were the reason for the 2nd visit. They were excellent as it was during the first visit - tender and not salty with sweet sauce during this visit. The one serving lady staff was helpful. To the Chef on duty: Keep up the good cooking of spareribs. 5-star for ribs.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP:
1. Use Tripod and AV Mode F/8 and ISO 400.
2. I used white paper towels to provide the contrasting white background to make the image stand out.
3.
I used Photoshop Select and Mask to remove the background paper. Hence this image looks neat with white background.

4794. Impacted cheek pouch in a dwarf hamster. What to do?

FOR YOUTUBE VIDEO PRODUCTION by SHAH. HOOK (30 seconds of the final video if possible).

BE KIND TO PETS IMAGE

AUTO-NARRATION

Her beloved hamster stuffed his right cheek pouch to the maximum capacity for the 3rd time. This impacted cheek pouch of more than 2 weeks wafted a bad breath. The young lady took work leave to consult me in October 2014.

Bad breath of rotting vegetables wafted upwards to my nose. This was due to the prolonged storage of the decomposed food in the impacted pouch.  There was an ulcerated lip commissure.  The hamster had difficulty in drinking. It would have died of dehydration as days pass by.

“Surgical removal of the infected cheek pouch is the best solution,” I said.  “The pet hamster does not need of a cheek pouch to hoard food.”This time, the owner consented to the surgery and to accept the risk of anaesthetic death of her pet.

After the surgery, the hamster lived to the ripe old age. I did not see him or the young career lady since she accepted surgical removal of the cheek pouch which is the best solution.

FURTHER INFORMATION

VET CASE STUDY: Final Video - A dwarf hamster has an impacted cheek pouch again Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow). Year of video production: 2014

Her beloved hamster stuffed his right cheek pouch to the maximum volume again. This impacted cheek pouch had been present for more than 2 weeks. The lady owner took leave to Toa Payoh Vets to consult me.

Bad breath smell wafted from the prolonged storage of the decomposed food. An ulcerated lip commissure. I had advised the lady owner to limit food supply and evacuate cheek pouch regularly as she did not want surgery to remove the cheek pouch.

That would be the best solution as the pet hamster in Singapore does not need of a cheek pouch to hoard food. This time, the owner accepted my advice. She was no longer anxious after the hamster had no more right cheek pouch. The hamster lived to the ripe old age without having bad breath and needing veterinary treatment!

CONSULTATION AT 3RD TIME OF IMPACTED CHEEK POUCH. The owner decided to risk the anaesthesia to get surgery done.
