AUTO-NARRATION

Her beloved hamster stuffed his right cheek pouch to the maximum capacity for the 3rd time. This impacted cheek pouch of more than 2 weeks wafted a bad breath. The young lady took work leave to consult me in October 2014.

Bad breath of rotting vegetables wafted upwards to my nose. This was due to the prolonged storage of the decomposed food in the impacted pouch.  There was an ulcerated lip commissure.  The hamster had difficulty in drinking. It would have died of dehydration as days pass by.

“Surgical removal of the infected cheek pouch is the best solution,” I said.  “The pet hamster does not need of a cheek pouch to hoard food.”This time, the owner consented to the surgery and to accept the risk of anaesthetic death of her pet.

After the surgery, the hamster lived to the ripe old age. I did not see him or the young career lady since she accepted surgical removal of the cheek pouch which is the best solution.

FURTHER INFORMATION

VET CASE STUDY: Final Video - A dwarf hamster has an impacted cheek pouch again Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow). Year of video production: 2014

Her beloved hamster stuffed his right cheek pouch to the maximum volume again. This impacted cheek pouch had been present for more than 2 weeks. The lady owner took leave to Toa Payoh Vets to consult me.

Bad breath smell wafted from the prolonged storage of the decomposed food. An ulcerated lip commissure. I had advised the lady owner to limit food supply and evacuate cheek pouch regularly as she did not want surgery to remove the cheek pouch.

That would be the best solution as the pet hamster in Singapore does not need of a cheek pouch to hoard food. This time, the owner accepted my advice. She was no longer anxious after the hamster had no more right cheek pouch. The hamster lived to the ripe old age without having bad breath and needing veterinary treatment!

CONSULTATION AT 3RD TIME OF IMPACTED CHEEK POUCH. The owner decided to risk the anaesthesia to get surgery done.
