4206. Product photography tips. Hamster food example

10 Aug 2022.
HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH PRODUCTS FOR SALE
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow)

1. The product should be around 75% of the image.
In Image 1, the white plate takes up around 66% of the image instead of the bottle of hamster food. You are not selling the plate! In Image 2, the bottle of hamster food and sample occupies around 60% of the image. That is all right.

2. Plain background – black or white is advised, not specks as in Images 1 and 2.

3. No brand names e.g. “Delicious” in Image 1.

4. No overhead lighting as seen in Image 2 to distract the viewer. Image gives a bad impression.

5. Do not use reflective objects, e.g. the glass in Image 2.

6. Use the rules of thirds in photography to place product, wherever possible.

7.  Do your internet research.

4203. A very itchy dew claw

8 Aug 2022. Veterinary stories by
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow)

A case of a very itchy dew claw tumour

The dog could not stop licking his right hind dew claw all the time, given the chance. I knew about this case when the owner wanted to buy Banocin antibioitc powder as he found it “good” for the inflamed dew claw and neck. I had not seen this dog since he was a puppy more than 13 years ago.

The owner had washed the dew claw, cleaned, powdered it and bandaged the foot for months. The old Shih Tzu wore an Elizabethan collar for months too. He tried to rub it off but inflamed his left neck with his attempts using his paws.

The dog had two nights of "loss of balance, in-coordination and collapse" at two different periods of time. "Old dog vestibular disease" was diagnosed by the emergency vets.

After my surgical removal of this tumour around one month ago, antibiotics, heart disease medication and dental scaling, the dog is normal and has excellent appetite in my follow-ups.

I am glad the old dog is not forced to wear the Elizabethan collar day and night for months, as it must be stressful - he had mouth ulcers at one time although his teeth had tartar and he had no periodontal or gum disease. I advised heart disease monitoring and medication. "My dog barks now and wakes me up to go to the bathroom after midnight," the owner commented. "He had stopped barking before his dew claw surgery and other treatment."

How to stop the dachshund biting the caregiver?

 7 Aug 2022

How to stop this male dachshund biting the caregiver?
Veterinary Stories by Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow)

This 2-year-old male Dachshund bites Maria the caregiver only one one situation. When her employer's wife comes home and she greets her. The dog exhibits aggressive biting behaviour by biting Maria. Very painful bodily wounds. What can I advise her?

1. BE THE DOG'S LEADER. When she dodges the bite, say loudly "NO BITING!". Some owners grip the dog's muzzle as part of the training and has told me it is a successful method. This is similar to the dam who would nip the biting puppy to stop the behaviour. This method is not practical as her personality is gentle and she is not the dog's owner.

2. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TRAINING. When she dodges the bite, say "GOOD BOY" and give a doggy treat or chew toy. It is easier said than done as it will take a lot of time. She is not the dog's owner.

4. OBEDIENCE TRAINING SCHOOL. The dog goes for "training" twice a week. This is unlikely to help unless anti-aggression behaviour is taught and reinforced at home with Maria being coached to prevent any dog biting.

5. NEUTER THE MALE DOG. The male hormones promote aggression in male dogs. It is better to neuter late at 2 years of age than let the dog inflict bodily harm on Maria. As he grows older, he may attack kids or visitors. The owners have changed their mind about neutering.

Stopping dog bites at a young age is important for safety reasons. Positive reinforcement training takes a lot of time. Neuter the male dog when he is 6 to 12 months of age or later at 2 years of age will reduce aggression to the caregiver.
