4206. Product photography tips. Hamster food example

10 Aug 2022.
HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH PRODUCTS FOR SALE
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow)

1. The product should be around 75% of the image.
In Image 1, the white plate takes up around 66% of the image instead of the bottle of hamster food. You are not selling the plate! In Image 2, the bottle of hamster food and sample occupies around 60% of the image. That is all right.

2. Plain background – black or white is advised, not specks as in Images 1 and 2.

3. No brand names e.g. “Delicious” in Image 1.

4. No overhead lighting as seen in Image 2 to distract the viewer. Image gives a bad impression.

5. Do not use reflective objects, e.g. the glass in Image 2.

6. Use the rules of thirds in photography to place product, wherever possible.

7.  Do your internet research.
