STUDY. The young Syrian hamster has swollen and painful private

HOOK for video production. 16 MAY 2022. This owner's video is taken 5
days after vet treatment of the Syrian hamster with swollen and
painful private parts. The owner sent me a short clip of her Syrian
hamster exercising the wheel as requested by me. He is normal after
the neuter surgery on 11 May 2022.

HISTORY. 11 May 2022. NEUTER by Dr Daniel Sing.
During
the first consultation earlier, the owner was given painkillers and
antibiotics for the pain and inflammation in the "swollen"
testes, injured by some metallic clips on the water bottle. The owner
requested neuter as the hamster was still irritated by the "swollen"
private parts and was declining in vigour and activity. She did not
want to wait and see. Neuter was done on 11 May 2022. I advised NO
cycling for 14 days after neuter at Toa Payoh Vets.

MYTH. Some 5 - 10 years ago, there is a myth in hamster forums that
hamsters will surely die if they are put under anaesthetic. This is
incorrect as modern anaesthetics do not kill a normal hamster
undergoing neuter. Neuter is seldom performed in the male dwarf or
syrian hamsters as a routine.

In Toa Payoh Vets, we perform neuter on cases of infection, abscess
and traumatic injury of the testes. Neuter is one of the surgeries we
offer.

The Javanese grasshopper was on a red car bonnet in Lentor Plain at around 10 AM.
1. KNEEL and FOCUS ON EYE to get a sharp image. This ADULT Javanese Grasshopper is my 3rd encounter of the species. This photo is my only successful one of 3 encounters. Red car bonnet, Singapore, 12 May 2022 because shutterstock accepts it as stock photos for sale.
2. The sunlight was not direct but bright. Hence the overall image shows great contrasts.l

STUDY: MY RED-EARED SLIDER WHEEZES FOR 2 DAYS. WHAT TO DO? Be

On
5 May 2022, a lady owner in her late 40s made an urgent appointment
as her 2-month-old red-eared slider was "wheezing" loudly
for the past 2 days. She had researched the Facebook Sliders websites
and knew her pet had a respiratory tract infection.
From
the physical examination, I noted that the slider was very active. He
had a good appetite and pooped normally. But he had soft shells and
shell rot. He could turn upright in less than 2 seconds indicating he
was healthy (see video). “No wheezing now,” the lady lamented.
Some time later, the slider obliged and the short duration of less
than one second indicated sniffles rather than wheezes.

May 2022. TREATMENT: 1. Oral antibiotics and multivitamins.
Inpatient treatment at Toa Payoh Vets for 3 days advised.

To get a much bigger basking platform and tank to house the 2
siblings.
“Most
of the time, this slider bites the other one. He is a bully as he
bites the sibling," the lady told me. "But he is usually
pushed out of the platform by the bigger-sized sibling." This
slider would be submerged in the water for long hours leading to lung
infections as sliders need to bask as well.
3. A UVB light is
being ordered online. "The shop has a shortage of UVB lights
which are imported from Hongkong," the owner told me.
Medication
for white spots known as shell rot. This slider was in the water most
of the time. He would go into the water when exposed to morning
sunlight. So, he did not receive sufficient sunlight for his shell to
make Vit D which is needed, with proper feeding, for hard shell
formation. "His upper and lower shells are soft", I
showed the owner the "dent" that could be seen when I
gently pressed the shell surface with my index finger.
CONCLUSION:
11 May 2022 1. The owner replied to my WhatsApp that the
slider no longer wheezes or has white spots. "Good
evening Dr.. Miu is recovered.no more wheezing sound and white
spots. Shld I continue to brush her? Now the other one Mary, is
developing the white spots..I just put them tog last nite. ?

A spacious basking platform and UVB light were installed. The owner
was happy and sent a video.

On
24 Apr 2002, an 8-month-old red-eared slider developed swollen eyes
and stopped eating for many days. The lady owner was very worried. If
Terra continued to be anorexic, he would die from starvation and
malnutrition. Internet research on swollen eyes and eye drops from
pet shops did not restore Terra's appetite. Water hygiene, submersion
in water for long hours, lack of sufficient basking platform, no UV
lights or good water filtration system and diet are possible causes
of swollen eyes.
The owner resolved all the deficiencies and as at 1
Jun 2022, Terra has no swollen eyes, is active, eating a lot and free
from shell rot.
Terra is also known as TEE for the sick red-eared slider in this case study

great difficulty in grasping the salmon meat at home initially. Owner
is advised to be patient and feed small pieces of pellets and meat.
With time, Terra recoverd fully his ability to grasp food and swallow properly.

Toa Payoh Vets staff demonstrated to the owner how
to syringe feed TERRA since the owner did not
accept hospitalisation for around 3 days. From our experience, most owners will be unable to syringe oral medicatioin
to their pet red-eared slider.
27 JAN 2022. Owner is unable to syringe feed oral medication at home. She did not accept Dr Sing's advice to hospitalise the slider on 27 Jan 2022, during the first consultation. The staff at Toa Payoh Vets demonstrated to her
how she could syringe feed. (see videos x 2 above).
