3584. A dwarf hamster has a gigantic haematoma

2 May 2021. VETERINARY ANAESTHESIA AND SURGERY. 3 IMAGES. The owner's vet does not perform hamster anaesthesia and surgery and suggested euthanasia when the hamster stopped eating or was too ill. The owner surfed the internet and found Toa Payoh Vets. The large swelling was a haematoma with serosanguineous fluid. 

A cluster of grape-like nodules hid inside. The anaesthesia was high risk as the hamster was aged, thin, eating less and had the swelling for more than 3 weeks. The owner consented to the risks of death on the operating table. A happy ending for the owner.

ABOUT THIS CASE

A 1-year-old old female Syrian hamster had a small lump on her cheek some weeks ago. The owner went to the vet nearby but the vet does not perform hamster surgery. 

Delays in seeking veterinary treatment to excise this facial tumour led to a gigantic and heavy facial mass.
Such tumours are high risks as there will be profuse bleeding during removal. The large blood vessels supplying nutrients to this tumour are difficult to find and ligate, unlike those of the dog and cat.
 
Some vets don't operate on hamsters and may prescribe antibiotics and pain-killers. Some advise wait and see and then euthanasia later.  Time is of the essence as some hamsters are cancerous. Hence, the Singapore-based owner may need to search for a hamster vet    

BE KIND TO HAMSTERS. Surgery is the only option in the treatment of hamster tumours.

3859. Stray cat at KTP Hospital IG

 23 APR 2021. STRAY CATS.

Stray cats are an “endangered” species in Singapore’s public areas such as hawker centres. The authorities contract pest control companies to cull them.  So I was surprised to see this young stray cat at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital on 23 Apr 2021 at 11 am@toapayohvets

Orange butterflies --- Leopard (Phalanta phalantha phalantha)

1. 23 APR 2021: 11AM.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital is a hospital filled with plants and trees outside all floor levels, but there is a dearth of butterflies. I have not seen this species of an orange butterfly in Yio Chu Kang Crescent secondary forest in the past 2 years. It posed for me patiently, within 4 feet away. I managed to video it too.  I saw 2 yellow and 2 orange ones in the Medicinal Garden. Video of butterflies.

2. 9 JAN 2022: 9 AM.Upper Thomson MRT Station gardens. New garden plants and flowers planted by National Parks.5 fluttering orange butterflies, but two perched on leaves for photography.
