* MORE INFORMATION
The Malay Staff Sergeant (Athyma reta moorei)

30 Oct 2020. NATURE STORIES by Dr Sing Kong Yuen. SOME BUTTERFLIES ARE HARD WORKING EVEN WHEN IT IS VERY HOT AND HUMID. Athyma reta moorei butterfly.

The Esplanade-Theatres On The Bay’s Forecourt Garden has less than 5 species of butterflies at any one time when I visit. Many flowers but few butterflies and bees. Probably too much human spraying of insecticide and fogging to maintain a garden with flowers.

1 p.m. Very hot and humid. Bright sunshine. Blue skies. Most Singaporeans would be sheltered indoors if they have the choice. I thought all butterflies would be inactive when I went to the Forecourt Garden to look for them as my on-going project is to photograph butterflies and Oriental Garden Lizards in Singapore.

Wow, I had to correct my misconceptions. A rare sighting of a beautiful butterfly that just fluttered in front of me and did a dance. An uncommon butterfly in Singapore---The male Malay Staff Sergeant (Athyma reta moorei). I had not seen it before in The Esplanade or in Yio Chu Kang Crescent’s secondary forest---my two most frequented places for Nature photography.

This MALE butterfly did not dash away as most do. It hung around the flowers near me as if it wanted to and did an afternoon dance performance for me!

REFERENCE: The Malay Staff Sergeant (Athyma reta moorei) is an uncommon butterfly in Singapore. The video here shows a male which is brown. The female is yellowish orange in colour.

How to photograph dragonflies

So, when you’re out there looking for dragonflies to photograph, pay close attention to your background. Ideally, you want it to contrast with the colors of the dragonfly.

3423. Global Biodiversity Information Facility - free international biodiversity database

Straits Times Oct 10, 2020
Butterfly specimens from Singapore, Malaysia find new life on Web

More than 12,700 butterfly specimens from over 970 species native to Singapore and Peninsula Malaysia

were put online in the GBIF, a free international biodiversity database. They are preserved at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, collected between 1936 and 1998. Some species are extinct. It has 12,000 butterfly species to take online.  It has plans to digitalise stick insect specimens. LKCNHM has the good representation of stick insect diversity within South-east Asia. This region has the highest diversity of stick insects in the world.

https://www.gbif.org/

Butterfly species in this region are under-represented in global databses. It has 1,200 species compared with 496 in Europe.

Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia sit on the Sundaland biodiversity hotspot, one of the biologically richest places on earth.

With historical records online, scientist can do comparative studies on distribution of species, decline of species now extinct, re-introduction of these species.

by 1990, 114 butterfly species were extinct in Singapore.

3422. E-commerce tips. The Unleashed Pen. Etsy marketing. A success story

2 Nov 2020.

E-commerce marketing is very hard work. That is why not many people can succeed if they don't persevere.

It was kind of the founder of The Unleashed Pen to share great details of her success story. She netted $20,000 in May 2020 on one product!   Her website is:

https://www.etsy.com/sg-en/shop/TheUnleashedPen

TIPS FROM HER.

1. She is an experienced graphics designer.
2. She has her own Shopify shop costing US$29 monthly. Not much in sales. Attended Alison Prince's course. Zero to 100K. Let go of product that you think will sell. Sell what is trendy and what customer wants.

3.She started one product to test on Etsy. Dark heather grey tee-shirt. Not just with cute designs but targeted at new graduates in 2020. She wanted to make graduates happy as the Covid-19 pandemic affected all graduates.

4. May-June  seasonal. High quality gifts for graduates. She does her silk screening tees herself at first.
Later, farm out to May, from Zero-100K website. Great referral. Another silk-screen supplier. Increase her charges but sell much more.

Feedback from buyers. Keywords are "graduate gifts for her".

They want high quality (soft, quality tese) and silk-screened tees.
She sold first - regular tees.

college tees, high school tees, senior 2020.

--------------

5. Fulfillment.

5.1  Ship Station. She recommends it. Alison Prince also recommends it.

5.2  Esty has similar priced services too.  she uses Etsy too. Her labels printed by Etsy.

6. Costs to her as a seller
6.1 Esty charges around 9.8% as follows:
     0.20 cent/listing
     3% transaction fee,
      5% on shipping and 0.25cents

6.2  10% if use influencer. Can be as much as 20 - 50%.

7.  Esty upsells for her.
Key chain of similar design $10 with tees.  Free shipping if sale over $40.

8. Competitors. Esty has listing of few competitors at bottom, unlike Amazon.

9. Harvest email of buyers? She could refer some to her Shopify.

10. She sends abandoned buyers coupons.

11. Her other products - ear rings using laser and irridescent paint.

3 TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL LISTING.

1. Follow the Zero-100K system, a course taught by Alison Prince.  Start small. One product.

2. Great photo.

3.  Give them a great shopping experience and product they want.  Encourage feedback. She gives a card in a yellow envelope with each sale.

"Thank you for buying this product. You made our day. I hope we  made yours. If you have queries or comments, pleaselet us know. Website.  Please leave a review .
