3136. Email query on cat pyometra treatment costs

Hi !

We have a 1 yr old female cat that has not been sterilised yet.

We intend to sterilise her and has been to a vet but the vet is not able to proceed with the surgery as they told us there is a discharge from out cat vagina.

The vet advice us to bring our cat to other vets where we can afford the cost which most likely will be $1k plus or more. Unless if the vet accept payment in instalment.

We googled to find more abt pyometra. And understand it can be life threatening.

Our female cat have been on heat twice. Only recently before her sterilised appointment , we notice the discharge.

So we have read through from internet and most likely she could be having Pyometra.

There is no blood from the discharge but it is whitish and at times a pale pink in color.

Her appetite is normal & still plays around. Didnt show any lethargic , lose appetite or frequent trips to the litter.

May we know the estimation for the surgery , treatment ? And must our cat stayed overnight in your clinic after the surgery?

Estimated costs around $500 - $700 for surgery, treatment, IV drip, medicaton and hospitalisation for 3 days.

3135. A 9-month-old guinea pig has a bloated stomach

A 9-month-old guinea pig has a bloated abdomen. X-rays show lots of gas in the stomach and small intestines. This guinea pig loves to chew on any object, including the tunnel and new litter. So, the bits and pieces accumulate and impact the stomach and small intestines, leading to gas formation at the obstructed site. The diagnosis is impaction of the stomach and small intestines.

Prevention is difficult for this guinea pig. The other one is smaller and trimmer with no abdominal distension.

3134. A 20-year-old red-eared slider stops eating for a month. Why?

This 20-year-old male red-eared slider loved the 76-year-old woman owner who looks like 40 years old. He would chase after the small rubber ball when the owner threw it." When praised, he would clap his front paws!" she said.

For the past 1 month, he stopped eating. For the past 2 weeks, he had this coarse breathing sound and foaming mouth. What is the problem?

X-rays

X-ray showed some congestion in the left cranial area. Is it pulmonary edema?
The slider was syringed fed and did not lose weight of 950g for the past 2 days on in-patient.
He is much more active but does not eat. So, syringe feeding of critical care for another 10 days.

The slider recovered his appetite and went home.

On April 27, 2018, another 20-year-old slider came in with same anorexia for 2 months. Her neck and paws were swollen. Case study in another blog post.

3133. An orange breasted green pigeon and pretty big mushrooms are seen on 8am and 11.55pm Apr 12, 2018

For the past 7 days, I had no chance to photograph the orange breasted green pigeon as they don't appear. A single or couple did land on the tree opposite my exercise machine in the public park but they flew away fast, before I could zoom on them.

Today, one appeared and I was ready.
