I had a great holiday in Phuket from 7 - 12 August 2025. I get to know some locals and know a bit about the lifestyle on the villagers and staff in Mida Grande Resort.

13 Aug 2025: As a photographer, I am very interested in spotting the Common Mynah in Phuket as it is rare in Singapore and Sentosa. The Javan Mynah is the dominant species as it is more adaptable - feeding on garbage and on leftover food in hawker centres and breeding more. However, in 2025, I noted that there is a drastic decline in the Javan Mynah as it is considered a pest.
The Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) is a bird native to Singapore, but its population has declined due to competition with the introducedJavan Myna.While the Common Myna is still found in Singapore, it is less common than the Javan Myna.
Key Differences between Common Myna and Javan Myna:
Body Color:
Common Mynas have a brownish body, while Javan Mynas are predominantly black.
Eye Patch:
Common Mynas have a distinctive yellow patch of skin around their eyes, which Javan Mynas lack.
Status in Singapore:
The Common Myna is a native species that has been introduced to many other parts of the world, where it is considered invasive.
In Singapore, it's considered a common resident, but its numbers have decreased due to competition from the introduced Javan Myna.
The Javan Myna, introduced to Singapore, is now the more dominant and widespread species.
The Javan Myna is often the bird associated with complaints about noise and nuisance in Singapore.
Where to find Common Mynas:
Common Mynas can still be found in Singapore, particularly in coastal areas and places with less human activity,according to Birds of Singapore.
They are also found in open woodlands and around human habitation.
Stray cats are rare in Phuket's Patong Beach and villages, as in Singapore. My reason is that the government has had eliminated them contracting pest control companies to net them and get rid of them.
This young cat was relaxing on the road in Mida Grande Resort which has low occupancy in the off-peak season of August. He scurried to hide inside the leafy hedge. Totally safe and invisible.
He sprinted out to the steps of the villa when I looked for him in the hedge to take a photo. I shook the leaves and he decided that the place was not safe.
You can see that he is alert but at a safe distance. The afternoon sunlight lit up his eyes as I took photos. As I walked nearer, he quickly climbed up the steps and disappeared. So he sprinted out suddenly.
Be alert of the surroundings and people or employees.
Photography can teach me lessons about real life too.

I used Photoshop to highlight the lights in the eyes. Eye contact makes the photo attractive.

If you view his eyes, they are red (not white) as he must be sweating in his face mask and thick shirts. He takes pride in his profession by buying the Grabfood jacket from the internet. There are actually people selling beautifully designed Grabfood jackets for such characters who want to look good and beautiful and give an excellent first impression! Probably a big online market for such attire?

I waited for the Grabfood to exit the Resort, focus on this face and got this photo.
8 - 12 August 2025. My family and I stayed at Mida Grande Resort's Villa No. 8109. A 2-storey 3-bedroom corner villa with spacious living areas. It has bright natural daylighting, microwave, washing machine and fridge.
My room was on the first floor next to a small rectangular pool.
Surprisingly, this room has NO wardrobe nor clothes hanger. Very unusual for a 5-star Resort.
On 10 Aug, I gave feedback to a cheerful Front Desk Manager called Fern. She said the absence of a wardrobe was in the design and she could provide the clothes hangers.
My first floor shower's hot water was not providing the hot water - at the most lukewarm water. Perhaps the management should look into this.
Staff service was excellent, especially the cheerful security guard (photo) and Buggy drivers. Front desk managers like Fern who conversed in good English and her staff provided excellent services.
When Fern's buggie staff thought my access card to the Villa 8109 was denied access, the reason for not able to unlock the door was due to "insufficient battery charges" on the door handle. Fern sent her other manager to investigate. (The buggy staff had said an engineer would attend to this problem).
The door still could not open when the staff used my access card. Fortunately, my other family members had returned from dinner. I asked one member to use her access card...the door opened easily.
Hence the problem was my faulty access card, not insufficient battery charges! This was a rare problem for me as access cards in my other travels usually had no problem opening the doors.
The breakfast staff was helpful. I would recommend at least two vegetable dishes. On 10 August, there was none but there was one on 9 August.
Fern, the cheerful and helpful Manager of front desk speaks good English. She is an asset to the hotel as many patrons speak English. Keep up the good work.
All buggy drivers - keep up your cheerful demeanour. Many thanks for ferrying my families.
