4441. Rabies vaccination in dogs and cats

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. The virus enters the body, travels along the nerves to the brain, causing inflammation (encephalitis) and severe neurological symptoms

If symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. However, it is preventable through vaccination, either before potential exposure or travel to at-risk areas (pre-exposure prophylaxis) or after exposure (post-exposure prophylaxis).

In Singapore, a rabies vaccination for a person costs around S$300.

VET CASE STUDY. A cat has rapid breathing for the past 6 months. Why?Acquired Chronic Diaphragmatic Hernia Pt 2 of 2. TREATMENT

This 5-year-old female feral cat in a village in Myanmar was knocked down by a vehicle around June 2024. She survived, eats and drinks normally. But she has the deep abdominal breathing daily for the past six months. Why? The village vet could not diagnose the cat's problem. The cat feeder got a 2nd opinion and was pleased to know why her cat had this medical condition of difficulty in breathing. Dr Thet Hmue Kyaw, BVSc (Yezin) had X-ray evidence of diaphragmatic hernia to show her why. Dr Thet explained the pros and cons of surgery in this video. Surgery is the only treatment but it is very costly and risky for this cat. The care giver thanked him and decided not to proceed with surgery.

Dr K Y Sing's advices to vets with no X-ray facilities. Do recommend your patient to a clinic with X-ray facilities to practise evidence-based veterinary medicine.

Today is 27 January 2025. This Part 2/2 video was scripted and created by Dr K Y Sing for Be Kind To Pets Veterinary Educational Video sponsored by Toa Payoh Vets to educate vet students and pet owners. Dr Sing's expresses his grateful thanks to Dr H K Thet for sharing his case.

4438. PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: VIP table Raffles Hotel Wedding lunch.

25 Jan 2025. Wedding lunch. Raffles Hotel.  Canon R5, 24mm, 1/500 sec, f/4.5, ISO 4000 (ISO auto, AV mode). I usually used ISO 400, f/11.I had a vacation waiter’s job in a hotel restaurant in Scotland in early 1970. The soup spoon above the plate is missing. Before serving soup, the soup spoon was supplied! Overall, a memorable lunch event in a luxury hotel.

I experimented with AV Mode, auto ISO which set at ISO 4000.
Usually I use AV Mode, ISO 400, f/11.

The benefit of a vacation job in Scotland as an undergraduate exposed me to the environment of the waiters and waitress, mainly students, earning an income during the vacation, instead of touring Europe
Hence I knew that the Raffles Hotel had not laid the cutlery in an orderly manner. Worse of all, the soup spoon is missing. I thought the soup was off the menu! Later, the soup spoon was handed over to us, before the soup arrived.

4437. Toa Payoh Golf Driving Range (demolished) information.

A site near the recently completed Kim Keat Ripples Build-to-Order (BTO) project. As the site is not close to an MRT station but on the city fringe, flats built could be Standard or Plus flats under the HDB's classification system for BTO flats.

Nearby amenities include Toa Payoh Polyclinic, Kim Keat Palm Market and Food centre, St Andrew's secondary school and junior college.
The driving range, built on part of the 3.6ha site, opened in late 1993 and closed in 2018. It has since been demolished.

Filling of Molar 2 has dropped out on 30 Sep 2024.
Went to KTPH to get filling done. It was well done as seen in Image 2 on 23 Jan 2025.

On 23 Jan 2025, a very bad breath from R nostril comes from tooth infection in M2 (2nd from L).

4433. "Watch your back"

“Watch your back” is a phrase that's telling you to be cautious and aware

Literally, it's saying to look behind you in case there's someone there that might want to hurt you.

Usually it's meant more generally.

4432. Casting a broken leg in a 2-year-old male Corgi in Myanmar

Vet-LITE is an airy and lightweight Low Temperature Thermoplastic material engineered to meet your splinting and casting demands. The material is made from a 100% cotton mesh which has been impregnated with a NON-toxic thermoplastic resin.

On 16 Jan 2025, the 2-year-old male Corgi dashed across a busy road. A car accident fractured his right distal femur. The leg was cast by Dr Thet Hmue Kyaw, BVSc (Yezin) using Vet-Lite. This is a closed reduction surgery and is much cheaper that open reduction to insert a medullary pin.

SINGAPORE CASE. Dr Sing Kong Yuen.

https://2010vets.blogspot.com/2017/12/3203-young-siamese-cat-fell-from-2nd.html

Post op on Dec  5, 2017    Pin and cast as the fracture is too close to the femoral head and cannot be stabilised just by pining. Pin protrudes out of femoral head to provide stability and this does not affect knee flexion and extension. Pin removed in 8 weeks.

1. E-collar 8 weeks as cat tends to lick cast and wet it or bite it off.

2. Cast must be kept dry. Is protected by bandages.

3. Review 2 weekly

4. If paw is swollen, see vet immediately

5. Cast removed in 6 weeks ideally
