4814. Phobia of lizards

25 May 2023 Morning Walk. THE LIZARD.

"Don't move, there's a lizard!" the Indian father shouted to his daughter ahead of him and pulled the leash of the dog. I was looking for a lizard in this public garden near to Lentor MRT Station but it is uncommon. I looked at the father and son frozen like statues, through the gap of the leaves of the plants from the other side. I couldn't see any lizard from my side.

When they left, I went to the same location to try to photograph the lizard. None was seen.

This girl of around 8 years old will be frightened of lizards for life owing to the father's actions.

"No chance of photograhing a lizard today," I said to myself. I packed up my tripod gear and looked one more time at a tree trunk in front of me. I can't believe it. There is a young lizard basking in the sun!

4812. To photograph sunset, use Manual Mode

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP.  SUNSET.

It is difficult to get a sharp image of sunsets. The ordinary camera's non-manual settings will not give the actual colours.

4811. HPB's Fitness Challenge

I used to walk around 2 hours during Covid-19 pandemic taking photos of the butterflies and wildlife in Yio Chu Kang and to de-stress. In 2022, I seldom walk as the butterflies had mostly vanished owing to end of pandemic and increase in construction.

The HPB fitness tracker free of charge. Most important it has the free online record of the steps I take daily, without me having to upload and record myself.

If you use its features, you can check whether you walk more actively as there is a graph of your Moderate and Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA).

MVPA is the one useful health feature. Unless you have heart conditions or illness, the government health authority recommends 150 minutes per week. Do your MVPA as it makes your heart beats faster to circulate your blood and lymph

Make use of the MVPA graph to monitor. The challenge is to walk at least 5000 steps daily and accumulate 150 minutes of MVPA per week.

4810. National Steps Challenge. Health Screening at Singapore General Hospital.

24 May 2023.

NATIONAL STEPS CHALLENGE.

The Singapore government offers a free tracker watch and recommends 10,000 steps to walk per day, with at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPV). This program aims to get the residents to exercise and to reduce obesity leading to diabetes and heart diseases.

I find the tracker useful as I can monitor my daily exercise from the data which is uploaded online via the App.

DEMENTIA. Exercise moves the muscles and blood circulation for sedentary senior citizens and younger people. Blood reaching the deeper parts of the brain is said to prevent dementia.

SARCOPENIA.  Physical exercises tone up the muscles, preventing sarcopenia in the elderly.
Sarcopenia is characterized by loss of muscle mass, strength, and function in older adults. Signs and symptoms include weakness, fatigue, loss of energy, balance problems, and trouble walking and standing.

MOTIVATION FROM THE TRACKER. Without this tracker watch and online data, I was not walking much.

HEALTH SCREENING AT THE SINGAPORE GENERAL HOSPITAL ON 24 MAY 2023. I have borderline high blood pressure at 144/80.  I aim to walk at least 5,000 steps to try to lower my borderline high blood pressure naturally from 144/80 to below 140/80. This involves at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity which is shown by the App online.

4807. HEALTH TIP: A tattered wing butterfly gets some sunlight.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO TIP. USE A TRIPOD

1.  VIDEO. Use a tripod

A tattered winged butterfly basks for several seconds in the morning sun  22 May 2023, 10.23am

2.  IMAGE. Tripod and shutter priority (TV) are important. Canon. TV 1/1000 sec, f/4.5, ISO 1250 for image. The tripod is there when the butterfly flew by, hence I could capture a sharper image of the butterfly.

HEALTH TIP. CONNECT WITH NATURE.

Sunlight enables our skin to make Vitamin D by a chemical process. People who are usually indoors will have fairer skin, but their blood Vitamin levels will be below normal. Vit D is important as it is needed as part of Calcium and Phosphorus to maintain bone health. To prevent osteoporosis.

You will note that recommended "Calcium tablets" sold in pharmacies in Singapore usually have calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin D combination.

Also spend “me time” with nature as retirees do get depressed and sedentary.

Not to over stress oneself by being sunburnt, as the skin will age faster due to excessive ultraviolet radiation.  Suntan lotion is always advised.

This butterfly has severely tattered wings due to traumatic injuries onto its wings as it flutters amongst vegetation throughout its life.
