6867. Poem. A beauty above us

2nd version of poem

On this mid-Autumn Festival night, We hold hands that have clasped firmly Through over 50 mid-Autumn Festivals Dearest Pam, look up to your left  A bright yellow ball Is bolted to the black sky Look through the drifting cottony clouds Can you see a lantern so white and bright? Fifty Mid-Autumns, hand in hand, Fingers laced, as we always planned. Through the years that clouded and the years that cleared, Your light was always somehow near. The mid-Autumn moon still find a way to shine A reminder that even on a hazy night, On this mid-Autumn Festival night There's always something beautiful and bright.

Poem for video
Mid-Autumn, 25 September 2026

Tonight the grey clouds drift and glide,
A cottony veil drawn across the sky,
Shrouding the full moon's light.
As the Mid-Autumn night goes by.

We stand as two silver Seniors,
Hand in hand, fingers laced.
Through fifty Mid-Autumn Festivals now,
Each one by the other's side.

Dear Pam, look up, to your left!
Look past the cottony clouds that roam.
There, a bright yellow lantern.
Bolted to the black sky, our own.

Can you see it?
Through the thinning drifts of white,
It glows as it always has.
Patient, round, and bright.

And I think of us, my love:
Of the years that clouded and cleared.
Of the hazy nights we weathered.
With the light still somehow near.

For the moon has always found a way,
As you have found a way to me.

On this night of 25 September, 2026
On this mid-Autumn Festival night,
Grey clouds drift, glide and wave past
Drag a veil to shroud a bright full moon

On this mid-Autmn Festival night,
We hold hands that have clasped firmly
Through over 50 mid-Autumn Festivals
Dear Pam, look up to your left

A bright yellow ball
Is bolted to the black sky
Look through the drifting cottony clouds
Can you see it?

The mid-Autumn moon still find a way to shine
A reminder that even on a hazy night,
On this mid-Autum Festival night above us
There's always something beautiful and bright.

On this mid-Autumn Festival night,
On this 25 September 2026 night.
Grey clouds drift, wave and glide
Drag a veil to shroud a moon full and bright.

On this mid-Autumn Festival night,
We hold hands that have clasped firmly
Through over 50 mid-Autumn Festivals
Dearest Pam, look up to your left

A bright yellow ball
Is bolted to the black sky
Look through the drifting cottony clouds
Can you see a lantern so white and bright?

Look Up, Pam
A Mid-Autumn love song

Verse 1
Grey clouds drift and glide tonight,
A slow veil over the full moon's light.
It's Mid-Autumn, the twenty-fifth,
And I'm holding the hand that's held mine through it all.

Chorus
So look up, Pam, look up to your left,
Past the cottony clouds where the soft winds drift.
A yellow lantern in the black of the sky,
There's always something beautiful and bright.

Verse 2
Fifty Mid-Autumns, hand in hand,
Fingers laced like we always planned.
Through the years that clouded, the years that cleared,
With the light somehow always near.

Chorus
So look up, Pam, look up to your left,
Past the cottony clouds where the soft winds drift.
A yellow lantern in the black of the sky,
There's always something beautiful and bright.

Bridge (softer, almost spoken)
Can you see it? Can you see it glow?
Through the thinning white, so patient and slow.
The moon always finds a way to shine,
Just as you found your way to mine.

Final Chorus (slower, with a gentle lift on the last line)
So look up, Pam, on this Mid-Autumn night,
The clouds may hide it, but it's still our light.
Fifty years and the moon still shines,
There's always something beautiful and bright.

Suggested feel:

  • Style: Gentle acoustic ballad, guitar or piano, with soft strings or a light erhu or bamboo flute for a Mid-Autumn touch
  • Tempo: Slow, around 70 BPM, in 3/4 (waltz) or 4/4
  • Chords (key of G): Verses: G – Em – C – D. Chorus: C – G – D – Em, then C – D – G. Bridge: Em – C – G – D

I can adjust the lyrics for a stricter rhyme, write a shorter version for singing at a family gathering, or add a Mandarin or Cantonese verse for the festival.

Adjust the lyrics for a stricter rhyme

Look Up, Pam (stricter rhyme)
A Mid-Autumn love song

Verse 1
Grey clouds drift across the sky,
A veil where the full moon hides on high.
It's Mid-Autumn, the night is clear in my heart,
Your hand in mine, just like the start.

Chorus
So look up, Pam, look up to your left,
Where the moon breaks through, of light not bereft.
A golden lantern in the dark of the night,
There's always something beautiful and bright.

Verse 2
Fifty Mid-Autumns, hand in hand,
Fingers laced, as we always planned.
Through the years that clouded and the years that cleared,
Your light was always somehow near.

Chorus
So look up, Pam, look up to your left,
Where the moon breaks through, of light not bereft.
A golden lantern in the dark of the night,
There's always something beautiful and bright.

Bridge (softer, almost spoken)
Can you see it? Can you see it glow?
Through the thinning clouds, so calm and slow.
The moon still finds a way to shine,
Just as you found your way to mine.

Final Chorus (slower, with a gentle lift on the last line)
So look up, Pam, on this Mid-Autumn night,
The clouds may hide it, but it's still our light.
Fifty years and the moon still gleams,
Beside you, love, I still have dreams.

That draft still has a few loose spots, so here is a cleaner version with tighter, consistent AABB rhymes throughout:

Verse 1
Grey clouds drift across the night,
A veil that hides the moon's soft light.
It's Mid-Autumn, twenty-five, September's flight,
And your hand in mine still feels so right.

Chorus
So look up, Pam, look up and see,
The golden moon shines down on thee.
Through drifting clouds it finds its way,
To light our path the whole night through.

(Note: the last line above breaks the pattern, so use this fix:)

Through drifting clouds it finds its way,
To bless our Mid-Autumn holiday.

Verse 2
Fifty years of festivals past,
Hand in hand, our love holds fast.
Through the hazy nights and the clearing skies,
I still find home in your eyes.

Bridge
Can you see it glow up there,
Round and bright, beyond compare?
The moon still finds a way to shine,
Just as you found your way to mine.

Final Chorus
So look up, Pam, on this festival night,
The clouds may hide it, but not the light.
Fifty years, and still it's true,
Every moonlit night is you.

I made a mess of that reply by giving you two drafts, so here is one clean, final version to use:

Look Up, Pam

Verse 1
Grey clouds drift across the night,
A veil that dims the moon's full light.
It's Mid-Autumn, and by my side,
Your hand in mine, my joy, my pride.

Chorus
So look up, Pam, look up and see,
The golden moon shines down on thee.
Though clouds may drift and shadows fall,
There's beauty bright above us all.

Verse 2
Fifty festivals, hand in hand,
Fingers laced, as we had planned.
Through hazy nights and skies made clear,
Your light has always kept me near.

Chorus
So look up, Pam, look up and see,
The golden moon shines down on thee.
Though clouds may drift and shadows fall,
There's beauty bright above us all.

Bridge (softer, almost spoken)
Can you see it glow up there,
Round and bright beyond compare?
The moon still finds a way to shine,
Just as you found your way to mine.

Final Chorus (slower, with a gentle lift on the last line)
So look up, Pam, this festival night,
The clouds may hide it, but not its light.
Fifty years, and still it's true,
Every moonlit night is you.

The chord pattern from before still fits: Verses G – Em – C – D, Chorus C – G – D – Em then C – D – G, Bridge Em – C – G – D. Every couplet now rhymes (night/light, side/pride, see/thee, fall/all, hand/planned, clear/near, up there/compare, shine/mine, night/light, true/you). I can also make a shorter version for singing at a family gathering, or add a Mandarin or Cantonese verse.

A SHORTER VERSION FOR VIDEO NARRATION OR POEM

Fifty Mid-Autumns

On this Mid-Autumn night,
Dearest Pam, look up to your left.

See the moon, a golden lantern
floating through the drifting clouds,
softly lighting the night.

More than fifty Mid-Autumns
we have walked together,
hand in hand,
through sunshine and rain,
through clear skies and hazy ones.

Yet somehow,
your light has always found mine.

And tonight, beneath this moon,
I hold your hand once more.

After all these years,
the most beautiful light I see
is still you.
