 SINGAPORE - 11 SEP 2026: 9.42am. Yio Chu Kang Crescent forest. The Common Flameback (Dinopium javanense) clinging to a tree trunk is a vibrant medium-sized woodpecker. It has bright golden-yellow back, black-and-white patterned neck, and a bright red crest. It uses its strong, stiff tail feathers for balance and its chisel-like bill to forage for insects beneath the tree bark.

Very noisy. Sounds of this Common Flameback woodpecker climbing up and down the tree trunk hurriedly using its chisel-like bill to forage for insects beneath the tree bark.

It acts as a key feeder river or canal that directs urban stormwater and rainwater runoff, from parts of Ang Mo Kio and Yishun, straight into the Lower Seletar Reservoir.
