KITCHEN PANTRY.

"You hold this knife to fight with me!" Mr Wong, a 20-year-old, broad-shouldered muscular Chinese man's face was red and his eyeballs bulged. "You had been ignoring me during breakfast. Overlay text: Now, I get my left hand tied behind my back. Come at me with your kitchen pantry knife!". He had a white cotton tee and brown shorts.

I am David, a 20-year-old Chinese man making my cup of Chamomile tea for supper in the Dalrymple Hall's pantry. I was a thin bespectacled man, medium height and fair complexion. A 2nd year veterinary undergraduate at Glasgow University in 1970. I wore my faded black tee and black pants.

The pantry had the microwave, a kettle, cutlery for residents of the 4-storey Dalrymple Hall in Glasgow, Scotland. Each student had his single room. He will have communal breakfast at a long table and then proceed to Glasgow University.

What should I do?

Mr Wong, a 20-year-old, broad-shouldered muscular Chinese man wearing a white cotton tee and brown shorts confronts David, a 20-year-old Chinese man, thin, bespectacled, medium height and fair complexion wearing a faded black tee and black pants. Mr Wong said: "You hold this knife to fight with me."

Create video of Immediate De-escalation Strategy
Do not engage or accept the challenge: Do not pick up the knife, and do not play into his demand. Acknowledging or matching his aggression will only escalate a volatile situation.
De-escalate verbally with a calm, flat tone: Speak slowly and softly. Say something non-threatening like, "I don't want to fight you, Mr. Wong. I'm just making my tea and going back to my room."
Keep your hands visible and empty: Show him immediately that you pose no threat. Leave the kettle or cup down if necessary, but keep your hands open and away from any utensils.
Create distance and look for an exit: Slowly back away toward the pantry doorway. Avoid turning your back on him completely if you can help it, but prioritize putting physical space between you and the knife.
Evacuate and seek help: Once you are out of the pantry, leave the floor immediately. Get to another resident's room, a hall warden, or staff to alert them and call for assistance.
Safety Note: In a crisis involving threats of violence and a weapon, your primary objective is personal safety and self-preservation. Do not attempt to physically overpower or reason deeply with someone experiencing an acute rage episode.
