The "normal program mode" on a Canon EOS R5 is referred to as Program AE or P mode. In this mode, the camera automatically sets both the aperture and shutter speed to achieve a proper exposure, while allowing the user to adjust other settings like ISO, white balance, and focus mode.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Automatic Exposure:
The camera calculates the correct aperture and shutter speed based on the scene's brightness.
  • Program Shift:
While the camera automatically sets the exposure, you can use the main dial to shift the aperture and shutter speed combination while maintaining the same exposure value. This allows you to fine-tune the look of your image, potentially favoring a wider aperture for a shallower depth of field or a faster shutter speed to freeze motion.
  • Customizable Settings:
In Program mode, you can still access and adjust various other settings, such as:
    • ISO: Adjusting the sensitivity of the sensor to light.
    • White Balance: Correcting for different color temperatures in the scene.
    • Metering Mode: Determining how the camera meters the light (e.g., evaluative, center-weighted, spot).
    • Focus Mode: Choosing between single-shot autofocus (One-Shot AF) or continuous autofocus (Servo AF).
    • Exposure Compensation: Making the image brighter or darker.
    • Flash Control: Adjusting flash settings.
  • Benefits:
Program mode provides a balance between automation and control, making it a versatile option for many shooting situations.
  • How to Activate:
On the Canon EOS R5, you'll typically press the "Mode" button and then rotate the dial to select the "P" icon.
