The Sri Lankan crab has his revenge on the Senior Citizen

On 27 January 2025, I met this cheerful 60-year-old security guard in the Ang Mo Kio Hub car park.
He told me about the location of the vending machine for my fitness tracker watch.

Two days before Chinese New Year, I met Mr Tan, a friendly 60-year-old Chinese man working as a Security Guard. 

"You have lost an upper front tooth," I said as an older fellow Senior. "Don't you brush your teeth daily?"

"I bit on the claw of a crab," he laughed sheepishly. "I heard a loud cracking sound and the tooth broke into pieces!"

"It can't be a flower crab. It must be a Sri Lankan crab as its shell is as hard as granite!"

"You are correct," his laugh boomed across the underground Ang Mo Kio Hub car park. "I thought I was still a young man and did not use the shell cracker!"

"Some male retirees don't bother to get dentures," I told him. "They don't mind displaying big gaps in their front teeth when they converse."

"Not me," Mr Tan said. "I will go to a dentist in Johor Baru for help after Chinese New Year!". Singapore's dental costs are relatively much higher than Johor's.

It seemed that the Sri Lankan crab had his revenge on the retiree!

 “I thought i was still a strong vigorous young man!”

 “so, I did not use the crab shell cracker!”

 “you must have had bitten on the crab claw of a sri lanka crab!” i spoke from experience

 

 “you are correct!” his hearty laugh echoed across the vast basement car park

 tomorrow will be the eve of Chinese New year 2025.

 “not to worry,” he said. “I will get the johor baru dentist to fix my broken tooth!”
