4569. A large abdominal tumour in a female Syrian hamster around 1 year old.

VET CASE. Syrian hamster, F, 15 mths. Large swollen abdominal lump nearer to left half of abdomen.

Antibiotics had been given for the past 10 days.

Based on clinical signs of owner having observed that the hamster is still eating and peeing normally, female gender and increasing size of abdominal lump which is large and palpable by me, my first diagnosis of this female Syrian hamster of around one year of age is CLOSED PYOMETRA. 

Abdominal tumour like splenic tumour may be possible. Surgery (exploratory laparotomy) is advised soon. Please phone 6254-3326 for appointment as soon as possible.

Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow). X-RAYS. Syrian hamster, F, 1 yearABDOMINAL LUMP Posterior half of abdomenFirm, small grape size, about 1.0 cm x 1.0 cm palpated on 9 Feb. 10 days of antibiotics. Lump increases in size daily.1. Owner reports that the hamster eats and pees normally, does not exercise or lose weight.2. Female gender3. X-rays show a large abdominal mass pushing the intestines dorsally

DIAGNOSIS

1. CLOSED PYOMETRA likely

2. Abdominal tumours e.g spleen possible

ADVICE

Exploratory laparotomy as soon as possible.
