Jun 2022. A RARE CASE OF CAVITY CAUSING ORO-NASAL FISTULAS
Dr
Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow)
A
rare case of cavity in the Carnassial Tooth causing oro-nasal
fistulas in a poodle. The vast majority of cases affecting the
Carnassial Tooth or 4th premolar tooth is infection of the roots of
the tooth, causing pus to migrate to the nasal sinuses. There will be
swellings below the lower eyelids. Soon, the swellings ruptures into
holes or facial wounds.
Many dog owners think the dog has
suffered some traumatic injuries resulting in facial wounds with
oozing pus or blood and pus. Some vets may misdiagnose these
oro-nasal fistulas are facial wounds.
However,
such wounds do NOT heal despite medication. The only treatment is
EXTRACTION of the decayed loose carnassial tooth.
In this case of cavity in the crown of the tooth, ROOT CANAL TREATMENT will be the treatment of choice, but it will be expensive compared to DENTAL EXTRACTION.
