4071. Can a taxi driver earn a decent living in Singapore?

5 Jun 2022. I spoke to a Chinese taxi driver in his late 50s, bald middle and slim. He had just replaced his punctured tire on right back wheel at Lentor St at around 10 AM on this sunny Sunday morning.

1 "Earning S$3000 per month should be no problem working 9 to 4 pm", he said. "Provided you don't phone your fellow colleagues to drink coffee at 3 pm, like those elderly ones."

2. "All taxi drivers get Covid-19 infections. Some get infected twice in a short period.!"  Last time, we had to take an ART test every 3 days to report to the HQ, but no need now.

3. SH 9999 licence plate. "Don't you bother to buy 4D bets on these digits. You will never win and will be out of pocket!"

4. ComfortDelGro has the biggest fleet of taxis in Singapore. It also has apps, but we don't charge over 20% during Surge Pricing. Grab can charge even 100%. So his company cab is more affordable.

5. Now the Changi Airport pays us $8.00 just to go to the Airport to pick up passengers. Only T1 and 3 are open and they get 50% of flights - we have to wait a long time to get one passenger.
Pre-Covid, all 4 terminals were very busy --- 1 plane per minute. Hence, queueing up took a short time, We pick up passengers within 20 minutes.

“A taxi-driver can earn around S$3,000 monthly to support his family if he works hard 8 hours per day and does NOT take long coffeeshop breaks, like the old uncles!”, a Comfortdelgro cabbie in his 50s told me recently.

Face masks are NOT mandatory outdoors nowadays, but you can see all commuters wearing face masks despite relaxation of Covid-19 curbs.
