4104. A hamster's left ear tumour doubled in size in 23 days

Thursday, 3 MAR 2022, DAY 1: Today, the young couple brought the 1.5-year-old male dwarf hamster in for consultation. "Now the whole ear must be amputated," I advised. "Very itchy and ulcerated. Very swollen," I said. "It is likely a malignant ear tumour as it grows so large in 23 days." "It is best not to operate on a swollen inflamed bleeding ear tumour till 3 days later", I explained that the hamster is in poor bodily condition, having lost weight to 50 g now and the ear tumour was badly infected. The base of the ear was swollen - possibly an abscess is forming." SURGERY scheduled on Day 4, provided the hamster is active, eating well and has put on 5 g bodyweight. Otherwise, it may die under anaesthesia as it is weak and sickly now.
