How to treat an old Spaniel's "pressure sore"? Be Kind To Pets Veterinary Educational Videos, sponsored by Toa Payoh Vets Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow). 19 Dec 2021.
9 Dec 2021: The owner of an old Spaniel WhatsApp me as her old dog had an irritating weepy large skin lump of over 3 cm x 3 cm under the left armpit. She had consulted Vet 1 twice on 11 and 25 November. Vet 1 diagnosed "pressure sore" and assured her it was not cancerous. She put an E-collar on the dog to prevent licking and gave Vet 1's medication, Apoquel which reduces inflammation from the 2nd visit on 25 Nov. Antibiotics and anti-fungal medication were given as prescribed.
11 Nov - 9 Dec 2021: WhatsApp photos from the owner indicated that the left armpit more likely had a growing skin tumour than a pressure sore. The dog had bitten and licked it over some weeks to relieve himself of the itchiness caused by the infection of the "hole" of the tumour. She agreed to a check up and surgery 7 days later on 15 Dec. She would have to take the dog off all medication. She should put the dog on the E-collar 24 hours daily instead of half a day.
15 Dec 2021: The owner WhatsApp yesterday to cancel the appointment as she had important office meetings. "My dog's sore seems to be shrinking past 3 days. So, I'm not so panicky also now. I am using a theatre-grade sealing gel that my surgeon friend recommended to me. Thanks." UPDATE ON 26 Dec 2021:
Owner used the Magic Stratamed gel. Used 2 tubes so far. She said it was an amazing gel and showed 2 images. 15 Dec and 26 Dec. The wound had closed 90%.
TIPS AND ADVICES. 19 Dec 2021: Surgical excision to remove the growing armpit tumour and a small one adjacent to it on 15 Dec would have resolved the weepy itchy situation and improve the dog's quality of life. The sealing gel is not a cure. Actually, it was Vet 1's 2nd consultation medication that brought down the swelling. Wearing an E-collar 24 hours a day, instead of at night only, as advised by me helped too. It was NOT the magic of the theatre-grade sealing gel at all!
