THE SQUEAKING HAMSTER --- SHOW AND TELL

This 2-month-old male dwarf hamster’s fractured right hind leg was amputated at the knee level at Toa Payoh Vet 3 weeks ago. Now the hamster had two unusual bhaviours. “No. 1,  he squeaked loudly and for several seconds. 3 days later, he squeaked again,” the owner WhatsApp me. “Why he has this abnormal behaviour?

“No. 2. He rubbed his left ear frequently, using his left hind paw or both front paws,” the owner wanted to know the causes. On 27 May, Ms Thompson came to Toa Payoh Vets with Hammie.

“The inflamed and pinkish bald skin behind the left ear is due to frequent scratching with the left hind paw to relieve ear itchiness,” I explained. “Some dirt or sand had lodged deep inside the left ear canal.  As for the loud squeaking, the right scrotum and testicle were injured by friction with the bedding during movement. The pain caused squeaking. You can see the big bruise only on the right, not left scrotum. ”

I showed her the close-up digital phots of the affected areas as I told her again, the reasons for the two unusual behaviours.

SHOW AND TELL using CLOSE-UP PHOTOS gain the trust of the owner as the dwarf hamster's ear and scrotum are relatively small in area. The young lady could see the inflamed areas, but she felt much happier seeing the close-ups. “Please email to me the photos,” she  reminded me as she entered her cab to continue work from home. Singapore is in partial lockdown due to an increase in community infections arising from a virulent Covid-19 strain.
