A young couple saw the everted cheek pouch yesterday afternoon. I asked "Did you feed the larger sized sunflower seeds?"
The wife purchased such seeds few days ago as to give the hamsters a good treat.
Had 2 other dwarf hamsters fed on same larger-sized sunflower seeds (1.5 cm long) but had no problems.

Above stressed hamster has the cheek pouches excised after a few days and had fully recovered.

Sticky food or large sharp seeds irritate the hamster who then pulls out the pouch. This surgical condition is known as everted cheek pouch.

TREATMENT:
1.
Reduction. Push the cheek pouch back inside the cheek and hope it
will not come out again.
2.
Amputation of the big everted cheek pouch. Amputation or surgical
excision of the everted cheek pouch is the better option as compared
to pushing back the pouch.
