4087. Is my hamster's ear growth a cause for worry?

A Be Kind To Pets Veterinary Educational Video, sponsored by Toa Payoh Vets.

EAR WARTS IN YOUR DWARF HAMSTER.
Hi Doc, Is my hamster’s ear growth worrying?
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow)    5 Feb 2022.

A young lady WhatsApp to me with an image of ear warts in her dwarf hamster. “Hi Doc, Happy CNY!! Is my hamster’s ear growth worrying?” The short practical answer is “Yes” as it keeps growing and dangling on the ear. It is so irritating, yet the hamster can’t rub it off.

A recent case study will speak better than words.

This case is a very old 31-month-old female dwarf hamster who has more warts than any I had seen in Toa Payoh Vets over the last 40 years of my practice. Surgical removal is the only option as no drugs will make them disappear. As they grow bigger, they cause itchiness and irritate the hamster all day long. The hamster tries to rub them away, causing more traumatic inflammation and infection. In this case, the right eyelids got rubbed, became infected and swollen. Now, the hamster has eye infections as well as ear infections.

The owner wanted to try drugs from 19 Jan 2022, as she worried about death on the operating table during anaesthesia of the old companion. But the pet kept rubbing the right ear warts and the eyes during medication.

After surgery on 29 Jan 2022, I followed up on 5 Feb. The old balding pet leads a normal life. Sleeps a lot but now, without having to scratch the right ear and eye to relieve her itchiness, distressing the owners. They are happy now as they have peace of mind. In conclusion to the WhatsApp girl: “Hi Doc, Is my hamster’s ear growth worrying?”. My answer is “Yes.” There is cause for worry if your dwarf hamster has ear warts. The common drugs applied to warts will not eliminate them. Consult your hamster vet to surgically remove them once and for all, so that your hamster leads a normal life free from pain and infections of the ear and eye. 4086. Photography Tip: Manual Mode and histogram - Modern Bicycle Parking Bay, Upper Thomson MRT Station.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP:  Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow).SINGAPORE - 4 FEB 2022, 1 PM. MODERN BICYCLE PARKING BAY next to new Upper Thomson MRT Station.

Use Manual Mode and histogram whenever possible to produce clearer images. Canon DSLR EOS 90D, Lens 18-200MM, Manual mode, ISO 200 set. I focus on red bicycle, hand-held camera inside my car. Glaring afternoon sunlight.

Busy road, MRT station outlet opposite & a church make image come alive with action. I was lucky.  MORE SINGAPORE PHOTOS FOR SALE:  www.shutterstock.com/g/toapayohvets

4085. Singapore wildlife - Butterflies in Singapore - Yio Chu Kang Crescent forest pre-Covid times

SINGAPORE WILDLIFE - 2017 - 2019. Yio Chu Kang Crescent forest.
5 of my best photos of butterflies.  As at 2 Feb 2022, only the yellow butterfly species is seen.
The rest are no longer seen due to habitat loss by regular cutting of plants and grass of forest fringe and
anti-mosquito insecticide fogging. A construction of the North-South Corridor leads to deforestation.

4082. Singapore wildlife - 1 feb 2022. First day of Chinese New Year visit. short-horned grasshopper

1 Feb 2022 morning - The first day of the Lunar New Year is the time to welcome deities and visit the elders in the family to pay one's respects to them.

A young adult Shorthorned grasshopper (Valanga nigricornis) sat on the corner of the tiled car porch of my house. The nanny saw him and told me as I am into photography.

He could have been the green nymph I had photographed growing up on the leaf of my garden’s ladyfinger’s plant around 2 weeks ago.

4080. How to syringe feed the red-eared slider with oral medication. Stomach tubing.

 30 Jan 2022.

1.  https://youtu.be/9YH7R9ujq_U - Original video from owner of painted turtle in USA.

2.  My video advising owners not to do it

STOMACH TUBING A PAINTED TURTLE TO FEED MEDICATION

This video is a veterinary education video showing how the painted turtle is stomach tubed by its owner. The full original video is at:

https://youtu.be/9YH7R9ujq_U

A vet in the U.S taught the painted turtle owner how to stomach tube the painted turtle with respiratory illness to feed oral medication via stomach tubing (with a syringe). He created this video on YouTube.

Part of the video is reproduced here to educate turtle and tortoise owners on stomach tubing.

In this video, the vet is said to have taught the owner how to do stomach tubing. The owner grips the extended neck to prevent the neck from being retracted inside the shell. A small syringe with medication is pushed into the throat, down the gullet into the stomach. The plunger of the syringe pushes the oral medication into the throat.

I do not advise owners to do it as the syringe may get into the windpipe into the lungs causing death or serious injury as the syringe may traumatise the throat when pushed into the mouth.

Ask the vet to give the antibiotic injection or do the stomach tubing. An adult painted turtle shell is 5 to 10 inches long, but in this video, the turtle appears to be younger.
