KINDLE STORIES - The Dot-Dash Sergeant butterfly posed for me for video and photography 10 OCT 2021

 Sun 10 Oct 2021. 9 am

Overcast sky I went to walk along the open forest path of Yio Chu Kang Crescent opposite the Seletar Bus Depot. Saw 6 species of butterflies, but only this Dot-Dash Sergeant posed for me for over 2 minutes from 6 feet away, to photograph and take this video. The other 5 species flutter away after landing on the leaf for less than a few seconds.

Note the broken hind wings or was it born with this defect almost symmetrically torn off on the back part of both hind wings? I was able to take a sharp photograph as the butterfly was very patient and not afraid of me.

--------------------------------------

Description
The underside of the species is greyish brown. The upperside cell streak is entire and separated from the triangular spot beyond.
The butterfly is rare, and can sometimes be seen around flowering trees. The caterpillar of the butterfly is known to feed on Uncaria species.

Habitat & Habits
This butterfly is one of 5 species of the genus Athyma found in Singapore. It can be found in forested areas within the nature reserves. Like the other members of its genus, it is a strong flyer and difficult to identify on the wing. It is usually confused with several other species in the genus, particularly Athyma reta moorei and the Lance Sergeant, Athyma pravara helma.

Skunkvine Facts
Skunkvine is twining vine that belongs to the coffee family. It originates from eastern and southeastern Asia, but it can be found in the warm areas around the world today. Skunkvine grows in disturbed areas, on the sandhills, along the roads, in the mixed forests, floodplains, marshes and even under the water. It is rarely cultivated in ornamental purposes because of its unpleasant smell. Skunkvine easily occupies new areas and prevents growth of native plant species. It is classified as weed in most countries outside Asia.

Interesting Skunkvine Facts:
Skunkvine is woody vine with green, purplish or reddish-brown stem that can reach 30 feet in length.
Skunkvine grows by crawling on the ground, or by climbing over the trees and shrubs. It produces mechanical damage on the host plants and leaves understory plants in semi-darkness.
Skunkvine has oval to lance-shaped leaves with pointed tips. Leaves are oppositely arranged on the stem or rarely gathered in whorls of three. They are green colored, either smooth or hairy.
Skunkvine produces small, grayish-pink or lilac flowers arranged in long, curved clusters. Flowers contain both types of reproductive organs (perfect flowers).
Skunkvine blooms all year round in tropical areas, or during the late summer and fall in areas with colder climate. Flowers attract different types of bees, which are responsible for the pollination of this plant.
Fruit of skunkvine is shiny, yellowish-brown, round drupe. Each drupe is filled with two black seeds covered with white, needle-like crystals.
Skunkvine is valuable source of food for birds which facilitate dispersal of seed in the wild.
Skunkvine propagates via seeds and division of the root.
Chrysomelid leaf beetles, which consume leaves, and flea beetles, which consume root and root hairs of skunkvine, are used to eradicate this plant from occupied areas.
Scientific name of the skunkvine is "Paederia foetida". Name literally means "stinking opals" and it refers to the foul smell that leaves and stem emit and translucent, opal-like fruit that this plant produces.
High concentration of sulfur compounds in the leaves of skunkvine is responsible for the fetid smell of this plant, which is also known as "human gas vine" in Japan.
Leaves of skunkvine are rich source of beta carotene and vitamin C. They have slightly bitter taste, but they can be safely consumed in human diet (both fresh and thermally processed). Skunkvine is often used for the preparation of soups and dishes made of rice.
Leaves of skunkvine were used as a source of fibers in the past.
Leaves of skunkvine can be used to relieve pain and symptoms of dysentery and diarrhea. Leaf juice mixed with garlic can be used in treatment of arthritis, while juice from the root can improve digestion.
Skunkvine is perennial plant (life span: more than 2 year

The Dark Brand Bush Brown is probably the most common and widespread amongst the Bush Brown species. It can be found in urban parks and gardens and even in pockets of greenery the vicinity of residential estates. The species' caterpillar host plants are grasses - Cow Grass (Axonopus compressus) and Buffalo Grass (Paspalum conjugatum).

The species is a drab greyish-brown upperside and a paler underside that features a white post-discal band across both wings (this band is much wider in the female compared to the male). There are usually two large ocelli on the underside of the forewing with some obscure smaller ocelli which can be variable in different individuals.

*****STORIES FOR KINDLE - The optrometrist's 3rd daughter wants into his business

IMAGES FOR KINDLE AND VIDEO

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday Aug 26, 2013's interesting case

"I work very hard to raise and educate 3 daughters," the 67-year-old optometrist who used to work from 9 am to 9 pm said to me. "Now, two are married and I don't get a cent from them!"

His 3rd daughter who is slim and good-looking, wearing dual-colour short pants laughed. "Do you really expect the younger generation to give parents some money from their earnings every month?"

"I read of many Americans living with their parents nowadays, owing to economic downturn," I commiserated with him. "They have different values as regards filial piety which includes caring for  aged parents.

During a tour, the Norweigian tour guide told me that her son left home when he was 18 years old to share a rental apartment with friends. The government would employ him. She lived alone as a widow."

If they don't need your money as adults, you should consider yourself fortunate!"

Nowadays he closes his shop whenever he likes because his rental in downtown Orchard Road is around $4,000 while the other shop rentals in other malls were charging $8,000 - $20,000 rental per month.

"I do not charge clients who are poor," he declared to me. "There was one who asked me if he could pay by installments. His family member has cancer and so I said that he could pay me when he was able to do so."

"Would you be giving free spectacles if your rental was $15,000/month?" I asked.

"Well, the clients who need free spectacles will not step into such posh shops."

His 3rd daughter, in her late 20s had brought in a 13-year-old cat for me to remove an ingrown toe nail. She had phoned me at 10pm yesterday, as the cat's paw was bleeding. I had suggested that she bandaged the foot and bring the cat in today, in order to save on after-hour emergency bills which would come to over $300.

So, here she was, with her father. She would not bear to see her cat's ingrown toe nail being cut off  in her presence. So she left the operation room when I did it.

"My cat claws me all the time at home," she warned me. So I expected a ferocious lion all ready to swing her claws at me. But she was as quiet as a church mouse, so there was no need for a sedative. She just lied quietly and patiently on the surgery table. I took the chance to take some images for this story.

"Since you have worked for so many years, you must have lots of clients," I said to the father. "Is your children taking over your business?"

"No, my children are not interested," he had already given up on his 2 older daughters and this younger one was working happily in an events marketing company in publishing.

"I am interested," the 3rd daughter said she had spoken to him and would not mind attending the compulsory optometry course to be accredited.  He had not groomed the 3rd daughter.

"Rentals will not stay at $4,000/month forever," he had no confidence in his children to compete and bring his clientele business to a higher level.

"Have you got a website?" I scrutinised his name card as he said my spectacles were out-dated and old fashioned. "My spectacles are branded 'Gap'," I said. "The thick black frames were admittedly, not modern looking.

His 3rd daughter laughed as she knew that her father had no website. She  is from this internet generation who appreciates websites and know the leveling power of the social media.

Maybe the father knows that one-man-operator optometrist practice is a dying business but I don't think so. Many such shops hire people who come and go and there is a niche for proprietors who provide personalised service and is available over the years as the family members grow up.

My baby-boomer generation has many who ignore social media for branding and marketing, but not the 3rd daughter who represents the internet savvy millenials and Generation Z.

"Of course, the internet generation may not be loyal clients when they shop for the cheapest product," I said to the father. "Some do go for fanciful renovations and pay high prices. I believe there is a place for a niche optometry personalised service with the same optrometrist servicing them. Nowadays some do value experience over glamourous set ups and this is where your daughter will shine"

The father was unconvinced. It is 2021 now. I don't know whether the 3rd daughter had become an optrometrist now that there are more competitive shops like OWNDAYS Optical Shops from Japan with simple all-in-one prices.

Dear Judy,

There is a huge lump on my hamster. Initially it wasn't obvious. It was only recently when she is not as active where I noticed the lump getting bigger. I tried locating vets near me but all do not treat hamster. Please do see the picture attached. Is this curable? How much are the fees?

Thank you.
