How to socialize your veterinary practice.
Overview of the Issue
Many veterinarians, practice owners, and veterinary marketers are hesitant to jump into social media due to a fear of the unknown. How do we get started? How will we manage it? Will it work? The answers to these questions can be answered simply and will empower practices to begin using these tools with confidence.
Summary
1. Handle Negative Feedback
a.  Reviews are everywhere online, from Citysearch to Yelp to Google. Some are anonymous while others are not.
b.  Know what is being said about your practice and your veterinarians through regular Google searches.
c.  Anecdotally, negative reviews are a very small percentage of total online comments.
d.  Address a negative post or review tactfully.
i.  Acknowledge that you've heard their concern.
ii.  Express your interest in hearing their story or making things right for them.
iii.  Offer to speak with them offline (provide your phone number and/or email address).
iv.  Allow others to come to your rescue and handle negative feedback if they choose.
v.  Do not whitewash your page. Leave negative posts unless they are abusive or offensive.
2. Learn How to Properly Use Social Media
a.  Whether you outsource, delegate, or own your social media efforts, educate yourself on what's out there and how it works (Google "Twitter training").
b.  Use each social networking site's own help section.
c.  Ask someone to show you.
3. Dedicate Adequate Resources to Using This Medium
a.  Time
i.  Carve time out for yourself to manage social media.
ii.  Delegate to a team member you trust (have a social media policy).
iii.  Outsource to a marketing company with experience helping veterinary practices that will work with you personally.
iv.  Use automation tools, like SocialOomph, to manage your time.
b.  Money
i.  Increase your marketing budget to allow for social media.
ii.  Shift funds from other efforts, such as newspaper ads, into social media.
iii.  You may consider employees' time spent on managing social media as part of its cost.
4. Decide What to Say
a.  What's new at your practice?
b.  What relevant topics are trending now?
c.  What's in the news (extreme weather, recalls, pet holidays, pet issues, upcoming events, industry news)?
d.  Ask questions, post polls, and host discussions.
e.  Reward them for connecting with you via contests, prizes, and offers.
f.  Spotlight clients or other pet-related businesses (like groomers).
5. Know Your Return on Investment
a.  Set clear goals
b.  Track your results
c.  Know these 6 important campaign metrics
i.  Cost of campaign
ii.  Number of new patients
iii.  Cost per new patient (cost of campaign divided by number of new patients)
iv.  Revenue
v.  Average revenue (total revenue divided by number of new patients)
vi.  Return on investment (total revenue divided by cost of campaign, expressed as a percent)
vii.  Example:
a)  Technician spends 8 hours per month on social media at $12 per hour
b)  Cost of campaign: $96
c)  Number of new patients: 2
d)  Money spent to acquire each new patient: $48
e)  Total revenue: $180
f)  Average revenue: $90
g)  Return on investment: 188%

1222.Big limb abscess in a young guinea pig




Abscess was drained without sedation since it was rupturing and would take less than a few seconds.  However, there was some discomfort from the guinea pig. He went home to a happy owner.

1221. Large ear tumour in a dwarf hamster






It is not possible for all patients to survive surgery esp. dwarf hamsters as they are so small as compared to dogs and cats.  This rodent did not survive after surgery. Vets can try their best but they are not Gods.  Get your vet to excise small tumours as survival chances are much higher.

1220. Audit of urolithiasis case TP 44309

Much follow up by the vet must be done as the owner usually does not bring in urine samples on a 2-monthly basis. Unfortunately vets are busy and perhaps a written schedule of urine tests should be given to the owner.

Three bi-monthly urine tests negative of crystals and acidic pH with no bacteria and an X-ray is my advice before the dog is off the medical dissolution of stones diet.
Each vet has his or her own advices.

In this case, the owner does buy C/D or Urinary S/O seriously and has no urinary problems since 3rd opinion at Toa payoh Vets on Apr 4, 2013 to date (Nov 28, 2013).

It is time consuming to get history from Vet 2 and the vet needs this history to know what's happened on April 1, 2013 when the dog consulted Vet 2 for a 2nd opinion. The $1800 cystotomy fees prompted the owner for a 3rd opinion. As the stone appears quite small and had been flushed into the bladder by Vet 2, Dr Daniel recommended medical dissolution as an alternative.

My audit recommendations.
A written schedule of urine testing every 2 months and calling the owner to comply is necessary in medical dissolution trials as an alternative to surgery. Use of social media to remind the owner to send urine samples to Toa Payoh Vets, using Google calendar? This will be the future of vet medicine. Vets just don't have time. Must make time. Just advising anti-struvite diet is usually the case.

The dog still has bacteria in the urine and so far the owner has not come for antibiotics.  X-ray from Vet 2 and comments are below. Very rare case of an owner taking some trouble to send urine for testing, but at >2 months for the 2nd sample!  Still it looks like the diet is effective as the owner is happy with no urinary tract obstruction and has saved $1,800 on surgery!





  
The purpose of audit is to see whether standard operating procedures are effective or new processes need to be implemented and is not meant to reflect on the skills of any veterinarian.
at Toa Payoh Vets. I do audit my own cases too.  There is just no time to do audits as it takes many hours of research and review.

Under "Discussion"
Good design is important in designing your product (1) like the social media webpages as many viewers will not return  to view poorly designed ones like Facebook. Good, preferably daily updated contents are necessary to connect and communicate with viewers. Any website not updated regularly (less than a week) will not get repeat viewers as they do not waste their precious online time going to inactive hyperlinks.   Navigation to links must be easily available and used. Good design webpages like UCLA has been shown earlier.

Under "Sharing my social media experiences"

For social media, I use 2 platforms:

1. The corporate website  www.toapayohvets (image) since the start of the world wide web in 1997 (Clara to verify by researching). I paid a US webmaster to start up. The website was grey and white in the pioneer days. She could not cope with my demand for instant updates and she charged for every update. This was too costly for me. I discovered Microsoft Frontpage software which allowed me to update my own website and this is what I have done over the last 20 years. (image of 2013 webpage) and has around 100,000 views.  

My advice for the average busy vet works 10-12 hours per day is to focus on one platform to be successful in the top 10 search rankings of Google and YouTube where the younger generation usually seek to find what veterinary services they desire.

2.  I use blogger.com (image) since 2010 for my own research reports on hamsters, dogs, cats and other small animals. In 2013, there have been over 200,000 page views and 43 followers (image). I do not pay Google to market my blog but the search engines have ranked many pages on the top 10 as the content is relevant. For example; goto Google and search "hamster tumours vets" on Nov 28, 2013, I can see the first 2 listings refer to my webpages. They are as follows:
