4026. PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: The Peacock flower. Use tv mode.

REFERENCE:

The flowers are borne on terminal clusters of about 20-30cm tall. Each flower is bowl shaped, 2-3" across, with five crinkled, unequal red and orange petals, and ten prominent bright red stamens that extend way beyond the corolla. There is one modified petal which is smaller than the other 4 petals. The typical orange-yellow flower hybrid is the most common one cultivated in parks and gardens. However, there are other hybrids which feature all-yellow, pink-white and all-red flowers.

The fruits are oblong, with thin flat pods of up to 10 cm long and look like Snow Peas. The pods are light green when immature, turning to a dark brown when ripened. Each pod contains 8-10 flattened dark brown to black seeds which are ejected as the pod splits open at maturity.

4204. PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Leafhoppers. Manual mode, tripod

Leafhoppers in Singapore are small, sap-sucking insects belonging to the family Cicadellidae. They are commonly found on various plants, including grass, shrubs, and trees. Examples of leafhoppers found in Singapore include the Tartessus ferrugineus and the Mango Leafhopper (Idioscopus Nitidulus).
Key characteristics of leafhoppers:
  • Size and Shape: They are typically small and wedge-shaped.
  • Feeding: They use piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap, which can cause damage to plant tissue and potentially transmit diseases.
  • Movement: Leafhoppers can move sideways, similar to a crab, and some species exhibit distinct coloration.
  • Honeydew: They excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that can lead to the growth of sooty mold.
  • Life Cycle: They go through egg, nymph, and adult stages.

  • Mango Leafhopper (Idioscopus Nitidulus): Another specific species found in Singapore, according to Singapore Geographic.

What is the upper right first molar number?
The right permanent maxillary first molar is known as "16". The left permanent maxillary first molar is known as "26". In the universal numbering system, an uppercase letter is used to identify the tooth. The right deciduous maxillary first molar is known as "B", and the left one is known as "I".

4202. VET CASE. Syrian hamster has right swollen face below the eye.

Hi Dr Sing, I'm a hamster owner from Malaysia that has followed your videos about hamster surgeries for years.

I need your advice for one of my syrian hamster as I don't have another avenue to consult. He's almost 2 years old who has survived some illnesses before such as a wet tail.

About a month ago I noticed he has sticky eye on the right eye, nothing else unusual. Thinking it was just sticky eye (he had it before from bedding dust) I wash his eye regularly with saline solution and removed all irritants from the enclosure. The regular washing did solve the sticky eye problem but his right eye started bulging out a bit more than usual. At first I didn't notice it until a fur trimming revealed that his right face is actually swollen, pushing part of his…
Thank you for your email. I do need good images of his head, eyes, face and inside his mouth and video
It is hard to advise based on text
he's not losing fur i just trim the right face to show the swelling

4199. Mental wellness in patients. Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Yishun Pond Park.

Google Review.
22 Jul 2025: 10.36 am
I had a tripod and Canon R5 set up to photograph a dragonfly. Suddenly an overweight female security guard in white blouse and black pants asked me "What are you doing here?".

She was not well trained to be polite or discerning. Anybody could see me at the tripod with my Canon camera taking photos of the plants or something inside the "Botanic Gardens" of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), opposite Kopitiam.

Such security guards need to show their authority to photographers who carry bigger cameras other than handphones! They will ignore a person using handphones, but not one using a digital camera with tripod.

"I am taking a photo of the dragonfly," I informed her. She said, "It is ok to take photo of the dragonfly BUT  NOT OTHER areas!".

I attach a photo of the rare dragonfly, likely a Neurothemis intermedia for viewers.

KTPH has a billboard showing about 30 species of dragonflies and damselflies have had been photographed. In reality, you would be lucky to find one dragonfly during your visit.

1. Sign Consent Form. Risks of fracture of bones, sinus.

2. Local anaesthetic injected into gums on both sides.
3. Slight pain on one injection site as liquid injected into the gums.
4. Wear sunglasses protect against bright lights.
5. Suction tube.

6. Dental chair

7. Dental set on tray.

8. Periodontal ligament loosened.

9. Tooth extracted.

10. Crown about 5mm in height. Flat surface. Can't see vertical

fracture. Said to have no space to install crown after root canal work, so best to extract. Gauze swab plugged into the large hole of first molar to stop bleeding. Two spare gauze and note to contact

emergency or private clinic if there is bleeding. But no bleeding 12 hours later.

11. History of smelly pus from right nose last month. Antibiotics.  Best to extract as infection

must have gone to nasal sinus. After extraction, I held my two nostril and inhaled. The dentist said no holes from sinus were seen.

12. An excellent painless tooth extraction. 3 roots. First molar upper right quadrant.
