Memecylon caeruleum is a shrub or tree species in the Melastomataceae family.

The Memecylon caeruleum Jack (1820) is a shrub or small evergreen tree, 3-8 m tall, with cylindrical trunk and smooth and brown bark in the young branches, wrinkled and greyish in the older ones. The leaves, on a 3-6 mm long petiole, are opposite, simple, oblong-elliptic with acute, obtuse or retuse apex and entire margin, 8-16 cm long and 3-6 cm broad, coriaceous, of dark green color and shiny above.

Inflorescences, on a 0,5-1 cm long peduncle, axillar, compact, of 1,5-3 cm of diameter, carrying numerous tiny flowers with cupped hypanthium, 3-4 mm long, 4 sepals, 4 ovate petals, long 2-3 mm, red externally, deep blue internally, and 8 stamens, about 2,5 mm long, blue. Obovoid fruits, about 1,5 cm long and of 1 cm of diameter, initially of a pink to red colour, then blackish purple or black when ripe, edible, usually containing only one seed immersed in a juicy purple pulp.

Attractive species due to the foliage and the tiny intensely colored flowers produced for most of the year, utilizable as isolated specimen, for hedges and borders, as it tolerates pruning well, and in street trees in parks and gardens of tropical and subtropical climate regions .

It requires full sun or a slight shade and fertile soils, well drained, kept almost constantly humid; it tolerates moderately brackish soils and marine aerosols, and can therefore be cultivated near the sea.

The fruits are locally eaten raw or roasted even if rather bland. The wood, which has good characteristics of resistance, hardness and density, is used in the construction of houses, for furniture, poles, sticks, tools and handicraft articles, it is also excellent as firewood, due to its high calorific value, and for the production of charcoal. No particular uses are known in the context of popular medicine, except in some populations of Malaysia where the roots are utilized in postpartum cures.

Obovoid fruits, about 1,5 cm long and 1 cm of diameter, initially pinkish, then blackish purple and black when ripe, are edible but of little value

4852. TRAVELS SINGAPORE. "My teeth are original!" said the 73-year-old man.

TRAVELS SINGAPORE.

23 Jun 2023.

This fit and lean 73-year-old man had just returned from a solo tour of towns in Thailand.  He had said hello when he saw me taking photos of the Redhill Close flats using a tripod. He showed me his travel photos.

The inexpensive and good food made me salivate. The hills he climbed after spotting them from his hotel room. The temples and gods he visited. The clean beds and toilets. The deserted fine beach he swam in.

I wished I was there, if only I could walk briskly and far.

I complimented him on his excellent fitting shiny yellow dentures. "My teeth are real", he everted his upper and lower lips with his hands to the maximum. "These are my original teeth!"

I could see the roots of the front teeth in his thinned gums. Many elderly men looked strange with gaps from lost front teeth. But they could not care less. This man had a full set, albeit shiny yellow instead of white "dentures". I mistook them for dentures.

I learnt my lesson. No more denture compliments from me from now on.

 I met a man 👨 called Eric

He was my age at 73

“You are lean and trim,” I complimented.

“I am like this because I am a poor man,” he pointed to my paunch.

I didn’t reply

I was taking photos of the demolition of Redhill Close when he approached to ask about my hobby.

He whipped out his mobile phone from his shorts suddenly

and narrated his recent solo tour of towns from Bangkok to the Northern Thailand

His two male buddies had backed out of the tour. So he toured solo.

The Thai food was cheap, tasty and clean - no diarrhoea or stomach aches

He swam in a deserted white sandy and clean beach.

“I saw these hills from my hotel room” he showed me the photos. “I climbed up to the top.”.

I wished I had his strong muscular legs and iron knees.

“The beds are very clean and so are the toilets”, he showed more photos.

The reader must be bored now.

I wasn’t as I am into travel photography.

After some more photos of the gods and temples, I said, “You have good fitting dentures as there are no gaps between the teeth.”

His front teeth were gleaming a shiny yellow although most dentures I saw in the elderly are white and not glossy.

Dentures do come in various hues.

Eric’s eyes shot out fireworks 🔥 as he said, “I still have my original teeth!”

“Look, look!”, he everted his lips very widely as if I was his dentist. “ These are real, very real teeth!”.

I could see the faint outlines of the roots of his incisors under the thinned pink gums.

The moral of my story?

Don’t compliment dentures. It is a risky and sensitive issue!

4851. PHOTOGRAPHY OF STRAY CAT. Not easy to get eye contact

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP:
EYE CONTACT makes photo attractive. Not easy to get one.
Shoot more than 3 shots at AV Mode, ISO 100, F/11, 1/30 sec. Focal length 105 mm.

A stray cat is free to roam around Redhill Close Estate, Singapore on 22 Jun 2023, as he has been spayed or neutered. This is evident by his clipped left ear tip.

4850. Riddle joke - Why did the chicken cross the road?

"Why did the chicken cross the road?" is a common riddle joke with the answer being, "To get to the other side.

Do you 'give it up?' Well, then: 'Because it wants to get on the other side!'

It is commonly seen as an example of anti-humor, in that the curious setup of the joke leads the listener to expect a traditional punchline, but they are instead given a simple statement of fact.

4847. NATURE VIDEOS. The Happiness Tree in Singapore.

The Happiness Tree (Garcinia subelliptica) is planted as an ornamental tree on the Lentor Loop roadside, Singapore. It has a compact conical crown, glossy leaves and globular orange fruits. The tree looks impressive when fully grown as it has the narrow width with dense green leaves. It is used as an ornamental tree in Singapore General Hospital and on the roadside.

This video shows the orange-like fruits in one tree in Lentor Loop, Singapore. It is rare to see the orange fruits in these trees. Hence I took this video to document the oranges.
