A 3-year-old intends to pluck a red tulip at Tulipmania Floral Display, Gardens by the Bay on 3 May 2023. He must be doing such acts during outings. The child must be taught not to pluck outside flowers and he will learn to treasure Nature. If the domestic migrant worker does it, she must be educated too.
In this photo, the father managed to stop his kid from plucking the tulip.

She would be busy measuring, following directions while keeping an eye on the clock and the oven during her non-working days. Her mother would be baking with her.

"Please take this cake home," her mother said. "I have no space in my HDB kitchen to keep so many cakes!".

I thanked her mum. Her cake was not tasty nor a feast to the eyes. Well, she was a novice baker.  Both created many cakes of all kinds.  

 Her passion created great cakes. However, she did not marry my son. So, no more cakes for me!

Recent smartphones take  much better photos than many DSLR cameras. I guess the photographer had steady hands and held her breath to take a sharp view during her morning walks.

IS IT MEMOIR, PERSONAL ESSAY OR PRESCRIPTIVE?

Understanding how POV differs in these types of personal narratives is crucial to tell the most powerful and effective version of your story.

1. Memoir. How we tell a story about something that happened to us in the past. Autobiography presumes that the reader already knows who the author (celebrity) is. e.g. John Cleese's autobiography - So, Anyway.

 A writer of personal narrarative must establish from the first paragraph whatg experience the reader can expect to have. In a pure memoir, the character is rhe only POV present in the story. Pure memoir reads very much like fiction. The author does NOT address the reader directly to explain. To tell the story accurately, you tell from the character's POV. It requires forgiveness as the character does not know he is going to make mistakes.

2.  Personal Essay.
Essays describing entirely one's personal experiences, rather than "call to action" articles. The latter is meant to inspire action in others.  The author sees a problem with the world, believes he ahs the solution and lays out why and how the change should be brought about.

It is like a memoir, describes the changes that occurred only within the author as a consequence of their experiences. One of several stories. A memoir allows the story to do all the teaching while the authori in the personally essay is present periodically to speak directly to the reader. 

Many writers find conveying the lesson in the personal essay most challenging. They are shy to state something definitive about love, loss, or creativity. Someone will probably disagree with you.
So they prefer the memoir where the story does all the talking.

3. Prescriptive.
The author is most present of the 3 categories.
It is called work instructional or self-help. The author has lerned something, probably given lectures or taught workshops on the subject. wants to share what they have learned so that the reader might improve their health, finances or their writing. This article and most of WD articles fall into this category.

 

The author is an instructor. The bhook is an instruction manual. Stories may be used to illustrate.
The reader understands that the author will be the one delivering the message. 

Prescriptive and personal essays seem rather close as the author is present to some degree throughout. The difference has to do with the story being shared. A personal essay is still mostly a story or stories. The prescriptive essay is mostly instruction.  The stories in prescriptive work are largely ILLUSTRATIVE, SHOW EXAMPLES of how to apply certain techniques. 

A story is always driven by what a character believes is true at the time the story is taking place. 

CHOOSING YOUR CATEGORY

If the author really listens to their story, the story will tell that author what it wants to be.

4673. Use 1/3 the focal length and F/16, AV Mode, ISO 400.

To get sharp image including “Japan Travel Centre”, I used Canon R5, 24-105mm, focus at 1/3 the focal length (man, left). Use AV Mode, F/16, ISO 400. I don’t know whether the smartphone can get this type of image.

4672. Photography tips: Reading room of Punggol Regional Library

SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

The reading area of the brand new Punggol Regional Library, Singapore, 23 Apr 2023. This is an excellent smartphone photo taken by Poh Kuan. The seat’s back has shown a split line (gap) where the two halves were “glued”, likely due to poor workmanship and design as the Library just opened on 5 Apr 2023. The distracting lines were erased by Photoshop. It would be a better image if the 5 seats were positioned “symmetrical” in taking the photo.

4671. Photography. Spadix and spathe.

Spadix: This is also a modified spike with a fleshy axis. It contains numerous sessile flowers arranged acropetally. The spadix is enclosed by leaf-like large, bright, colourful and curved bracts known as a “spathe”. Female flowers are present at the base, male and sterile flowers are present at the top

 A spadix is a spike borne on a fleshy stem. The subtending leaf-like bract is called a spathe.

The spadix and spathe are a main focus of Anthurium breeders, who develop cultivars in bright colors and unique shapes. Anthurium scherzerianum and A. andraeanum, two of the most common taxa in cultivation, are the only species that grow bright red spathes. They have also been bred to produce spathes in many other colors and patterns. Anthurium plants are poisonous due to calcium oxalate crystals. The sap is irritating to the skin and eyes.

Anthurium plant greets visitors to Terminal 4, Changi Airport in Mar 2023. Some spathes appear to be infested with fungal spots and have had lost their pink colours. It is a daily battle to maintain the health of plants and ourselves too.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: Use a tripod and AV Mode.

The White Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum) has white spadix (fleshy spike with flowers) and spathe (leaf-like bract). The Anthurium is a purifying plant as its leaves suck up ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene and xylene from the environment.

This white anthurium was seen in Floral Fantasy, Gardens by the Bay in 3 May 2023. 12.21pm
