VIDEOGRAPHY TIPS:
Many smartphone users do not realise that movies should be created in the landscape mode as opposed to portrait mode. Landscape images align with the horizon line. The photo is wider than it is tall, to capture the vastness of a natural setting. This view is landscape orientation or horizontal orientation. An example of a the Oaks Coffee Co. movie story using the landscape mode is illustrated.

4591. New cycling paths ST 13 Jan 2023

55km of new cycling paths in Geylang, Hougang, Kaki Buit, Marine Parade, Potong Pasir, Sengkang and Serangoon.

LTA doubles the existing cycling network from 530km now to 1,300km by 2030.
Will connect residents to key amenities, e.g. tranort bodes and schools and improve cyclinglinks between towns. 

4590. A paddling red-eared slider stresses out the owner.

The slider paddles her hind legs non-stop stressing the owner. What to do? In Singapore, most red-eared sliders live in the tank as over 80% of the population lives in apartments. An adult female slider can stress out the owner if she paddles her hind legs non-stop. Day and night. She has no appetite. The owner can't sleep in peace. What can the owner do?

The owner consulted me at Toa Payoh Vets. The first thing to do is to X-ray to check for eggs inside the abdomen as leg paddling is often a behaviour of egg laying. But this slider lives alone. Still, lone ones do produce and lay eggs.

9 Feb 2023. Fei Fei passed an egg inside the water. She had paddled for 2 days and had no appetite for 4 days. I advised X-ray to check if there are eggs retained and stuck inside the abdomen

In this case, she has no eggs as evident in the X-ray. I advised the owner to give her space for exercise. Fei Fei was cramped inside a small tank with a pink stool as a basking platform. 

 

The owner bought a much bigger tank. I advised outdoor exercise and sunlight at least 30 minutes a day. Water filtration and hand-feeding cooked prawns mixed with the usual Nutrafin pellets. Multi-vitamins with calcium smeared onto the pellets.

It took around 10 days. Fei Fei stopped paddling and revert to her ravenous appetite. The owner was very happy.

 Photography Tip: Use back focus at LFNK logo. Support your elbow on table top. Avoid the altar to the right of the logo as it will distract the viewer from the logo. VET CASE. Hamster lumps. What to do? 

The Syrian hamster owner feels a "blueberry" lump in the "stomach area" of his 13-month female Syrian hamster. The hamster ate less for the past few days. He was very worried. He took leave to consult me on Thursday 2 Feb 2023.

The Syrian hamster does not bite. So, it was easier for me to feel (palpate) her abdomen for the lump. My assistant Hsu was kind enough to video my examination using her Samsung Galaxy Fold 4. Very sharp videos unlike my Canon R5 which has difficulty in focusing, producing blurry videos.

You can see the "hair loss" on the left belly area of around 1 cm across. It is not obvious during physical examination, but on review of one of the 2 videos, you can see that the hamster had been licking this belly area.

What is the "blueberry" lump in the abdomen? I palpated a firm globular lump in the bladder area of around 1 cm across or the size of a small-sized grape. What is it?

Possible causes are:
1. Bladder stone or tumour or infected full bladder.
2. Splenic tumour.
3. Close pyometra (uterus swollen with pus).

4. Abdominal tumour.

As the hamster released much urine (1 ml or more) during my palpation (see one of two videos), the retained urinary bladder could be the "blueberry" lump in the stomach area.

Antibiotics and painkiller for next 10 days first. If  the lump is still present, I will do X-rays and ultrasound.
