How to save money on hamster tumours?

Hamsters over one year old may develop tumours on any part of the body. Two examples are shown in the merged video of two cases.

1.  CASE 1. MAR 2022. EAR TUMOUR
Large ulcerated and infected bleeding ear tumour.  Video 00:00 - 00:49.
The owner waited till the tumour became large, painful, itchy and bleeding. He consulted me.
Surgery would be more costly owing to the longer time taken to operate.

2. CASE 2. JAN 2023. CHEST TUMOUR/ABSCESS

He WhatsApp to me today and sent a video.        Video 00:49 to end of video

'Hi, my hamster have this lump underneath her right front leg.. could you advice what can we do now? It’s also starting to smell and have some discharge."

MY REPLY:
The hamster needs to be examined and possibly an operation by your vet to remove the lump.

 Anaesthesia and surgery of tumours are considered costly, but the fees are much lower if the owner gets the tumour of less than 5 mm across removed. Most owners wait and see. The scratching of the tumour leads to bleeding and emission of foul smells. It is best to get the tumour removed by your vet when they are small.

THE SWOLLEN-EYED RED-EARED SLIDER STOPS EATING
Red-eared slider had swollen eyes and no appetite for many days.
1.  Treated by Dr Sing Kong Yuen at Toa Payoh Vets.
2.  Dr Sing advised a GOOD HOUSING ENVIRONMENT for the two red-eared sliders to prevent recurrences of swollen eyes and loss of appetite.

This includes:
2.1  More spaces to swim. The owner bought a bigger tank
2.2  More space to bask. The owner bought the white plastic basking platform. It replaces the small crammed floating object you would see in the blog.
2.3 UV lights placed above the basking platform in the daytime.
2.4 A good water filter and filtration pump. You can see the water has air bubbles and is clearer.

3.  The lady owner bought the above-mentioned items online from China. It cost her a lot of money. The eldest daughter's pets were now her responsibility. Hence she consulted me at Toa Payoh Vets in April 2022.

Instead of submitting a photo of yellow flowers which is quite common in stock photography, I create an inspirational electronic card for sale at
www.shutterstock.com. 

Photo of yellow flower taken during my 2013 travel on the way to Paris. Sun rays fell onto this roadside flower. Fellow packaged tour companions will wander around and have a coffee.

I looked for scenes to photograph. Sunshine. I took 2 shots. Only 1 is sharp. In old days, I use inexpensive Canon 40D camera.

Today on 4 Jan 2023, I reviewed my travel photos. 99% are of poor quality! I did not learn the techniques as that would involve lots of time. Use Canon camera. "P" Mode. Focus on flower and shoot!

Christmas light up in North Ryde.

North Ryde is in North Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.  It's a good and a very safe suburb, with one of the lowest crime rates (bottom 15) of Sydney's more central suburbs.It is located 15 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Ryde.

This video from my friend in Australia was a bit shaky because it was dark and he was walking briskly.

Christmas light-up is an annual event for residents in that street.  There were more houses decorating their houses with Christmas lights. New owners or some owners were either not celebrating Christmas or could not be bothered with the chores of setting up and the packing them afterwards.

North Ryde is just a normal residential area.  It is not a tourist attraction.

Many estates do have residents adorning their houses with Christmas lights and paraphernalia but visitors  or viewers have to know where they are.

4539. A Syrian hamster walks slowly and sways from left to right.

2 Jan 2023. Tele-consultation with Dr Sing Kong Yuen at 10.15am. The owner wanted to know why his 1.5-year old female Syrian hamster walks slowly and sways left to right. His appointment would be 11.30 am today as a physical examination is the best as opposed to tele-video consultation.

From his two merged video, I could see that the hamster has appetite as she eats the food offered without hestitation. But she looked haggard as she did not bother to groom herself. The furs stuck out. Urine stained her private parts which is not normal if the hamster grooms herself.

"What is the colour of her urine?" I phoned the owner. "She has yellow urine stains on her private parts."

"The usual yellow colour," he replied. "She urinates onto the sand, so I don't really know."

As regards the swaying from left to right, it is not possible to see properly. She could have had injured her head as I noted that her home was generous of space and filled with many things. The video was not clear, but gave an impression of a cluttered home in which the hamster could have had knocked her head - leading to swaying for around one month.

Or there could be an infection affecting the urinary system with toxins going to the head. The hamster owner said she drinks little water - build up of toxins in the urinary system can cause brain damage --- swaying. We will wait for the actual physical examination at 11.30 am and follow up.

CONCLUSION.
As at 2 Jan 2023, 10.30 pm, I contacted the owner. He said the hamster was given medication, but passed away in the evening today.

May I give human dhamotil to him?

He recently had a lump removed and 4 came back
Worried that it may be cancerous

Dr Sing said rhat the cancer may hv spread due to the location of the lumps. One suggestion was to amputate. Hmm but that will reduce his quality of life. The fur  covers the whole area
 

I got a similar case. It was during Covid-19 lockdown. Owner chose not to amputate. Euthanasia done later

Yes. Shave the area

Prognosis…depends on whether the cancer cells have had spread past the present location. If not, dog will live longer and adjust to being 3-legged very well
MRI scans of cancer cells in the dog is not practical

Tips to save money on vet expenses

Two vet cases seen by me in 2013 were: 1. Eye ulcers in a Terrier X - Fluorescein eye stain test. 2. Whole body itchy skin in a Golden Retriever. Clipping bald and anal sac check up 

 

Case 1. The long eyebrow hairs of the Terrier X irritated the cornea of the dog's ears regularly. The dog rubbed the eye a lot of times. The paw irritated the cornea which breaks into ulcers. These are corneal ulcers which are painful and light sensitive. The green ulcers can be seen in the left eye especially. 

 

The solution is to shorten the eyebrow hairs frequently and also to cut away the eyelid hairs, if any. No eye irritation, no corneal ulcers and lots of tears. No vet expenses. 

 

Case 2. The whole body itchiness of the Golden Retriever was due to skin rashes from bacterial infections under the thick coat. The itchy anus could be a cause of backside itchiness. The anal sacs were expressed at Toa Payoh Vets and cleared. There was little anal sac impaction as the oil was relatively clear and free of particles. The body showed multiple rashes after clipping. 

 

The solution. For thick coated dog breeds, brush their hair daily to remove any broken hairs and scales. Bathe weekly. Check for rashes. This home grooming care ensures no itchy bacterial infections of the underpart of the long coat.
