3. The Triangular-striped moth (Chalciope mydgon) is rarely seen in Yio Chu Kang Crescent secondary forest.
23 Dec 2024: Night time. Flew into Lentor Plain house.

I took many photos, using tripod. A tripod is needed to get a sharper image.

Chalciope mygdon, the triangular-striped moth, is a moth of the family Noctuidae. The species was first described by Pieter Cramer in 1777. It is found from the Oriental region to Sundaland.

Its wingspan is about 36–40 mm. Head and thorax dark red brown. Abdomen greyish fuscous. Forewings purplish grey. Costa ochreous. A large red-brown patch occupying the white wing except the costal and outer area, and crossed by an oblique ochreous band. Its costal and outer edges bordered by reddish ochreous, and their angle almost joined by a red-brown streak from the apex. There is a sub-marginal specks series present. Hindwings fuscous. Cilia grey below apex and at outer angle.[1]

Larva is a very slender pale bluish-grey semi-looper. Fine darker longitudinal lines present. The larvae feed on Phyllanthus species.[2]

23 DEC 2024:

The Triangular-striped moth is very rare and difficult to photograph. Internet searches do not show its eyes as the moth is small and will not stay long. This moth came to my house ON 23 DEC 2023 at around 8 pm, stayed on the wall for a long time. Only a tripod will you be able to capture its eyes. Still it is not a perfect photo.

4114. Videos of wasp moths in Yio Chu Kang Crescent forest fringe. Sep 2022.

The moths have to fool, but birds and other insects that might find these moths a tasty snack.

Hubner's Wasp Moths are Batesian Mimics. They look like their model (stinging wasps and bees), but they have no actual ability to sting or bite. The adult moths have only sucking mouthparts and no jaws.

How can you tell if you are looking at a moth, and not a wasp or a bee?

The antennae are a hint;

1. Moth antennae are long and feathery.
2. Moths don't have the narrow "wasp waist" common to actual stinging insects. Their abdomen is thickly joined to their thorax.
3. The mouth of moth has a long coiled proboscis rather than chewing jaws.

4113. TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY. GOOD MORNING IMAGE. Steel hand rails of Pagoda Complex

VIETNAM - 17 SEP 2022: Tourists brave the steep stairs of the Pagoda Complex of Mt Fansipan. Stainless steel hand rails are provided nearer to the Funicular Train Station but not at the lower stairs. It is best for those over 65 years old to use the hand rails.

4111. PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: Grasshopper at 11 AM, 9 OCT 2022.

8 OCT 2022

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: Use tripod. Shoot multiple shots in AV Mode. Indirect sunlight.

A basking Japanese Rice Grasshopper (Oxya japonica) in Yio Chu Kang Cres forest, 11AM, 9 OCT 2022, is a pest as it eats the farmers' crops. Global warming has increased its numbers in some countries.

Tripod is necessary. Canon R5, 105 mm zoom. AV Mode. F/10. ISO 100. About 5 feet away. Bright sunlight. Little breeze in Yio Chu Kang Cres forest. Multiple mosquitoes around my hands and trousers. Surprisingly, this grasshopper is not hopping away despite several minutes of photography. I had a video made too.
